Cliff House Hotel

I've always loved this venue but I've eaten here twice in the last month, once with friends and we all had the pies. Beautifully presented but they didn't live up to expectations. The pie crust itself was nice but the filling very mediocre and the guy serving behind the bar had no personality and service was slow despite it being quiet. Secondly and this is the one I'm really leaving the review for; mothers day... the meal and bottle of wine cost £93! We both had the 2 courses for £25 (25.04 if it was advertised correctly as each individual item had to be costed at 1p.) The service was terrible seemed to be full of young university or college students who had obviously been given an area each so they never once looked at another table. We weren't offered a wine menu so this was just chosen for us, no offer of table water, we had to ask for our veg to accompany the roast. The man who I assume was the manger on the day didn't once apologise for the delays on the food or that it was cold by the time the veg arrived. We watched several meals getting sent back. Very disappointed if this is new management ill think twice about returning again. Thank god the service charge was optional it would have been taken off.

Service very slow, waited 45 minutes for the drinks to arrive at the table and over an hour for food to be served. No apology for the wait and food was below average, roast potatoes were hard and undercooked and roast beef was tough. Contemplating whether I can be bothered to order a dessert! Spoiled a Mother’s Day treat!!

Nice hotel in a quiet and great location but some rooms need some maintenance. Staff could be more welcoming.

Has it changed owners ? Nothing like the image you get from 4 in a Bed. Breakfast especially disappointing. Coffee undrinkable and that was stated by at least 10 guests that day . No vegetarian option . Cheap nasty bread, eggs not freshly cooked but left under a heating lamp for nearly an hour. No granola just variety packs of cornflakes and cocoa pops . No power to the shower, cold room with windows left open prior to arrival. Curtains do not drawer and toilet did not flush . Women at reception and that night , curt , rude and frosty.

Went for a birthday Sunday lunch. The service was very poor and disorganised. There were no wine glasses on the table.I ordered the turkey but asked for just breast meat. When it arrived it was chicken!?! The waiter started clearing plates and bowls from the table before everyone had finished. The staff did not look or dress very professionally. The meal took 2 hours and 15 minutes for a one course meal. Having said that the food was actually good and value for money. Just sort the service and general organisation and would then recommend.

Very nice property in a residential area. Excellent staff. Awesome breakfasts that are included each morning from 8 to 10 am. Located just a couple of blocks from the sea and just a few blocks to lots of shops and restaurants. Guests should be aware that this "hotel" is really a cross between a B&B and hotel. If you are arriving on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday after 4 pm or between Wednesday to Thursday after 8 pm the front door will probably be locked. There is a telephone number to call mounted on the front door so someone can let you in. However, if you are arriving from out of Country you will have to take your cell phone off "airplane mode" and incur long distance charges if your cell phone package does not include such calls. Once you have checked in your room key will open both the front door and room. If you have difficulties with walking/climbing stairs make sure you book a room on the ground floor as there is no elevator access to rooms on the second and third floors.

I went for the bottomless brunch on Saturday with a group of friends and had the most fabulous time. Anthony was such a cheery and wonderful host. He couldn’t do enough for us. The Prosecco was flowing and the food was delicious. Really great atmosphere, staff, food and hotel. I will certainly be booking in again.

We booked this as a last minute secret escapes deal and have had a wonderful weekend. We were greeted by Tony who made us smile all weekend (don't stop being u). Thoroughly looked after by all members of staff and nothing was too much trouble. A small boutique hotel very well presented. The food was some of the best we have had and we have travelled alot - welldone Richard. We used anita for a last minute spa treatment which was lovely and relaxing. A real hidden gem and fantastic value for money would definitely return .... thankyou all x

The hotel itself is situated in a pleasant residential area, within easy reach of the beach and surrounding towns. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was well appointed with water, teas and coffees and a coffee machine. Bathroom had plenty of toiletries, bath and separate shower. Everywhere was clean in both the shared spaces and rooms. Nice bar / lounge on site. However, we both found the beds too hard, the TV didn’t always work and there was a very noisy boiler next to our room that fired up before 7.30 every morning and stayed fired up for the next 12 hours. An unpleasant wake up call every morning. I think staff might also sleep on the top floor and playing music loudly at 11 at night was a bit much and constantly walking around the room - although when we tried to speak to staff about it, they blamed the noise on ghosts! A buffet breakfast is at the weekends, but I would do one every day and not just waitress service during the week, Good choice for breakfast and all hot too.

Stayed here for 4 nights on a little break to the south coast. Very relaxing hotel with super nice staff, top notch food and one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a long time. We’re sad to leave actually. Writing this review from the conservatory, drinking tea, after we had an afternoon stroll on the beach (5 mins away).
