Courtyard Newport News Yorktown

The property was very dirty, including floors - furniture and even outdoor garden area. The photos and rating with Expedia are no current for I felt I needed an antibiotic just to stay there. I had taken out Trip Insurance and would have left immediately in seeing the facility but unfortunately, our friends did not and did not plan their stay with Expedia. I feel websites such as Expedia should recommend photos to be updated every 2 years for even Expedia's website advised a 4.7 out of a 5. There was a lot of yelling and arguing and wondered if guns would be blazing.

This was our first time in a Courtyard. We chose it because of its location close to the places we we were visiting, and its proximity to 3 dining options without need of a car: Texas Roadhouse, 3 Amigos, Raisin' Cane.

When we checked in, the answer we got to our "Good evening! We have a reservation." was a curt "Name?"- No "good evening" in return, no "Welcome to the Courtyard", nothing. Like standing in a food line in a fast-food restaurant. Nobody helped with the luggage; luckily I spotted a cart in a corner which we were able to use. On the next morning, the answer to our “Good morning! Where’s breakfast?” was a curt “There!" Breakfast was very disappointing. Some options were shown on the board, but not available. The avocado toast was not fresh fruit but an insipid spread on soggy whole wheat. The French toast looked like it was reheated, there were some decorative strawberries. Everything we tried looked like purchased in a cheap bodega. When we asked to have a muffin to go, we were told they were old and for display only. We ended up either skipping breakfast altogether or just getting coffee and a yogurt. The hotel seemed to be understaffed, with the manager also preparing the breakfast in the bistro. Staff gave the impression of not having been schooled in hospitality. They were usually not greeting the guests except for one woman who seemed to be one of the cleaning ladies. Nobody seemed to be proud of working there. There was one exception, a young lady named Armani, who actually asked if we were enjoying our stay so far and where we were from. And on the last day of our stay, the manager actually smiled at us. The room was dimly lit with only indirect and low-wattage lighting. On the first day there was a roach in the shower. The mattress was old and sagged in the middle, no way to sleep face down. The washer in the laundry on the ground floor was dirty and rusty on top. On the day of our check-out I was e-mailed a statement of charges which was $ 30.00 higher than the final price indicated on my booking.com confirmation. The manager assured me that the final charges on my credit card would correspond to the booking.

I enjoyed my stay. The place was so clean. The employees were friendly and professional. Parking was good. I am sorry I didn’t eat breakfast there. When I am in the area, I will stay there again…

Nothing fancy …. It was good for a one night stay over… Water pressure could have been better in shower and pool was closed due to maintenance issues . Front desk personnel was very nice and friendly

Absolutely the worst—and most unprofessional—hotel experience I have ever had at any Marriott property. Avoid this Courtyard at all costs. From the moment I checked in, it was a nightmare. My room was so filthy that walking barefoot ruined my socks from the grime on the floor. It’s obvious they do not clean the rooms properly. The phone in my room didn’t work, and the front desk staff was either incompetent or completely unprofessional—hanging out with friends who were screaming and laughing loudly in the lobby, disturbing guests. Even worse, I had someone repeatedly enter my room without permission. One time, a man came in claiming my AC was leaking (it wasn’t). The front desk offered no explanation or apology. Trying to resolve anything was a joke. I called the front desk 7 times—no answer. I used chat to contact them—left on hold for 3 hours. I called Marriott Bonvoy 3 separate times for help. Nothing. As a Marriott Bonvoy Gold member, I requested a late checkout (one of my perks). The hotel was empty, yet after hours of back and forth, they grudgingly gave me 2 PM. From 9 AM onward, my door was pounded on repeatedly with housekeeping screaming “HOUSEKEEPING!”—despite my Do Not Disturb sign and door latch. I was in the middle of an important Teams meeting with my SVP, and these constant disruptions completely ruined it. The last straw came when a large woman began screaming at me after I reminded her of my late checkout. When I closed the door to get back to my meeting, I could hear her yelling in the hallway: “Oh hell nah, you shut that in my face, you ‘bout to get f---ed up… f---ing b---h.” Minutes later, another woman pounded on my door screaming, “Get the f---k out!” I was genuinely scared. I was in room 128, the room closest to the front desk. There is absolutely no way that other guests—or staff—did not hear this happening and step in. That silence speaks volumes about the culture of this property. I left the hotel at 1:26 PM—earlier than my approved late checkout—because I felt unsafe. This hotel is dirty, chaotic, poorly managed, and downright hostile to guests. Marriott should be embarrassed to have its name on this property. If you value your safety, sanity, and professionalism—do not stay here under any circumstances.

The bathrooms were not cleaned very well. Some areas had some soap scum that was a half an inch thick!
