"Excellent"

Excellent character property, with well trained and cheerful staff, good service and good food. Only criticism would be small choice of vegetarian options and no Sunday vegetarian roast choice. Like others, we enjoy our Sunday lunch and were disappointed to have only a risotto or pasta dish offered. Why can’t a nut roast be offered as well

Ate here twice on consecutive nights, faultless. Hake and steak pie first night, gorgeous!! Second night steak (amazing) and monkfish. Everything well cooked and seasoned, beer and wine delicious, staff friendly and welcoming, plus dog friendly. Brilliant

I really did like it at this hotel. The secret gardens were beautiful, breakfast was brilliant, bed was comfy. There was a couple of repairs which should really be seen to like the net in the bathroom had a long tear down the middle and had mould on it, also the wardrobe door wasn’t in its runner. However this didn’t affect my stay and I would most definitely stay here again.

"Many thanks to all the staff!"

10.0

The staff were all so helpful especially Daniel and Louise in helping us to host our wedding party in their hotel. Friends stayed for the weekend and all were so very happy with the accommodation and food. The wedding ceremony was beautiful and the wedding breakfast superb. We can’t thank the whole team enough for one of the best days ever!

"Lovely - but lets not go too dog mad..."

8.0

A really lovely place - full of character and charm. The rooms were lovely, the dining area relaxed but high-end, and the bar cosy. My only negative would be the dogs. Not only are they everywhere - except the restaurant (thank goodness), but some owners let them sit on the chairs and sofas in the lounge and bar - as if they are back at their own homes - despite numerous signs dotted around asking guests not to do this. I think the staff need to enforce this a bit better as its a bit off-putting. Many of the seats around the place smelt very 'doggy' and one couple were actually feeding their dog breakfast scraps directly onto the sofa which left stains - that really is grim....

"Old fashioned charm and comfort"

10.0

Lovely little hotel in the pretty village of Dunster in the shadow of Dunster Castle. The hotel is quaint with winding corridors and loads of character. The room we stayed in was one of the nicest I have ever experienced - clean and modern bathroom, great wifi, very comfortable bed, good lighting (so you can read in bed), and doors out to a semi private and pretty garden. The hotel has a good restaurant; real effort is taken over the food (it is definitely not "pub grub") and it is pretty reasonable (starters under a tenner, mains around GBP20 to GBP30, wine starting at around GBP 25). You can have the same menu in the atmospheric bar. Or there is a pizza oven in the garden - I should say "gardens" as there are a series of five or six interconnecting outdoor spaces, all of which are very pleasant. In the morning choose the Exmoor breakfast and you probably won't need lunch (along with the "full English" there is fruit, cereal and croissants etc): or there are lots of alternatives such as salmon and scrambled eggs or eggs benedict. (NB: there isn't much choice of places to eat dinner in the village so booking for dinner in the hotel is sensible). The hotel doesn't have a carpark but you can park all day for free on the street outside (if you are lucky) or there is a public carpark a couple of minutes walk away (I'd suggest stopping on a double yellow and dropping bags off at the hotel before parking if you can't get a spot in the high street): the hotel reimburse the parking charges if you have to use the car park. Dunster is a good spot to stay for a night or two (or more). The (National Trust) castle is well worth a look - don't miss the waterwheel and the water gardens accessible from West Street. The north Somerset coast is worth a trip as well (Porlock weir is nice although some parts of the coast are very trippery). But the main reason to come to this part of the world has to be Exmoor, one of the prettiest parts of the UK. All in all, we had a very pleasant couple of days at this friendly and welcoming little place and I would love to stay again.

"Best hotel for miles"

10.0

What a great place to stay. From the moment we arrived at this great building, we were very warmly welcomed and didn't feel the need to go anywhere else in the Town as everything you could wish for on a stay was right there in the hotel. The reception/bar/restaurant staff were all very friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. There was a decent mix of experienced and younger staff, who all worked really hard, and the food was quite superb - thumbs up to the chefs and the staff who served dinner. The various bar area's and gardens, gave us ample room for relaxing and taking in the surroundings. I would very strongly recommend the Lutrell Arms and we hope to go back there again before the summer ends, if only to enjoy the pizzas in the secret garden. Great job, guys and gals - you have a super place and a great attitude towards your customers.

"Sadly Underwhelmed!"

6.0

I've been coming to The Luttrell Arms for over twenty years. It's always been a fave of mine and my family and I have recommended it to dozens of friends over the years. I also work locally and send a lot of customers there with a glowing review. However I was recently informed by more than one them that they'd had a bad experience so feeling a little responsible, I thought I'd see for myself if their feedback was unfounded. I have left a review before but feel compelled to write another after having visited twice here in the past week. Once in the restaurant and once in the bar. The bar staff although new, were polite and helpful if not a tad confused. The manageress however not so polite or helpful and when we requested a different table, responded in an abrupt and overly loud manner, pretty much suggesting that it was our fault they couldn't accommodate us as we hadn't booked. I politely - but firmly - informed her that we had booked but we had been told on the phone that we couldn't reserve a specific table. When I requested a different table on arrival (ours was close to the door) all the other tables were empty but had reserved signs on) I was told that it wasn't possible as these other tables had been specifically requested, despite being told on the phone when I booked thay they were on a first-come first-serve basis - go figure! We had arrived early for this very reason. Anyway, we opted for a table in the front bar but there was a service-point less than two feet away from my chair and the same distance to the bar which would have become noisy and busy with customers and staff alike walking through the narrow room. By now we were feeling a tad unloved so we opted to go up to the terrace and try a pizza. They give you a buzzer so you can pick it up at the pizza bar and take it back to your table. When I asked the chef for some sauces he gestured toward the pay- point at the bar. I went there with my freshly baked pizza in hand to find no staff there. I returned to the pizza bar to tell them this and asked if they could give me some mayonnaise. They pretty much shrugged saying I couldn't use the sauces they had there in bottles as I had to pay for packet sauces. My pizza although delicious was getting less hot by the second and I was left to return to my table with no mayonnaise. Not a huge problem on the grand scale of things but we found the whole process quite tiresome. and somewhat less than memorable. My experience in the restaurant however was slightly better because we had a wonderful waiter on Sunday 11th August. He was polite, attentive and extremely welcoming. However...the manager who had been rushing around like an Olympian found fault with something he'd done and pulled him up on it for all to hear. I found this acutely embarrassing on behalf of this wonderfully professional waiter. and left feeling underwhelmed. I now understand why my friend's experience of this once friendly and charming hotel was less than he had been promised by myself. In his words.. they have simply become an impersonal cash-cow. Such a shame! Polite request - to please look after your staff better and maybe respond to your negative reviews with positivity and not excuses.
