Fabulous property. The accommodation was immense and super comfortable. The food offering was excellent especially the breakfast and Robata restaurant. Yes there are many seasonal staff and in the concierge area there was some lack of local knowledge but any shortcoming was amply compensated for by the universally charming staff. Cannot recommend more highly.

"Service is the issue here."

I wanted to like this property but too many service failures made it not worth the price. This property is gorgeous. Nice ambience, nice decor and just luxury overall. Unfortunately that's where it ends. Check-in was more painful than it should have been. When they say 4pm check-in, there is no exception given. When most of the guests are all bottlenecked into a 4pm check-in, you can expect it to be a slow and painful process at that point. Guests arrive throughout the day depending on their flights and because of that strict check-in time, you get tens of families trying to get their rooms at that time. Maybe something needs to be looked at here? We all knew ahead of time what the official stated check-in time is but suffice to say housekeeping speed is part of the issue here. On normal days housekeeping is slow, very slow. I'm sure they're trying to do a good job but when it's oddly slow there must be an issue. No issue with the cleanliness and great attitude of the housekeeping staff but it's just slower than anywhere I've ever stayed. This is also evident in guest services. You can actually call guest services 4-5 times without getting through to anyone. Even leaving a message doesn't get you a call back till hours later. This simply leaves you in disbelief. It would never, ever happen at any other high-end property. On the occasion you do get through to someone, your request (something as simple as bottled water or tissue) would take over an hour to fill. They do remind you that requests can be done online, but same issue, requests don't get filled at all (requested 5pm, reminded at 10pm, never filled that day) Staff quality here is also a huge issue. This property likely relies heavily on seasonal staff from around the world. Problem is when you have a team that is new every season it is hard to maintain good service. Especially when you get staff that are used to working in non-luxury resorts it shows in the way they interact with the guests. Most obvious in the ski-concierge area. The staff there are non-attentive and generally unhelpful. Sure they'll do their minimum to get you going but that's about it. One saving grace is the food. Food here is fabulous. Food quality is fantastic. We tried pretty much all the options and the two I really wasn't impressed with was the robata and the sushi restaurant. Both were very mediocre in taste. I was expecting great things with the sushi restaurant but it left me feeling rather disappointed. There surely must be no shortage of new guests wanting to try this property given the year over year rate jumps but at some point you will stop getting return guests with the soft product that is lacking. Still by far one of the nicest properties in the area, but when the Aman and other new luxury developments come online, we shall see.

"Beautiful luxurious hotel, but service standards dont’t match up"

Quality of the facilities and rooms were top notch. The selection of restaurants was also good, thought all at the high price range. Esp good are Teppan and Sushi Misukawa.

The service standards really needs to be dialed up. 1) When we were checking in, we drove up to the entrance and there was a car in front of us. Two of the bell staff started helping them and did not even acknowledge us. We waited, and five minutes later this was still the case. I finally went in to the reception to get someone to come and help. 2) On the day of check out, we dropped by reception after breakfast at around 9am. There was only a young Japanese staff member at the desk. I asked if we could have a slight extension to our checkout - from 12pm to 1pm - as it was raining heavily outside and we were going to use the gym and then the onsen. He said no, as all rooms of the type we were in - King room with Mountain View - were sold out for that day. I later found out that it was a lie as I checked online and could have booked 5 (maybe more) of this room type on booking.com for that night. This is all very shoddy and disappointing for a hotel of this class and price point.
