The Walper Hotel, part of JdV by Hyatt

The hotel is conveniently located in downtown Kitchener and there are several coffee shops and small stores and restaurants nearby. The room was clean and there is a small fridge inside the room. Hotel front desk staff also courteous. There is limited parking on site, guests need to park in the nearby parking lot. Overall no issues. I would stay there again.

I booked this hotel specifically because I needed a quiet room, and I clearly stated this in my reservation. Instead, when I returned around 9 p.m. ready to sleep, I discovered that the hotel was hosting a full-on party directly below my room. I’m talking blasting music, heavy bass, shouting—the kind of noise no earplugs on Earth could fix. What’s worse is that this wasn’t some spontaneous event. It was a scheduled party, meaning the hotel knew it would be loud. Yet they still placed me one floor above it, even though my reservation explicitly requested quiet. If you’re hosting a loud event, why would you put anyone—let alone someone who specifically asked for quiet—right on top of it? Basic planning and common sense were clearly missing. When I called reception, I was told the hotel was “100% full” so they couldn’t move me. That’s not my problem. My request for a quiet room wasn’t last-minute, and it should have been honored or at least considered when placing guests. Instead, I ended up stuck in a room where sleep was impossible. To make things even more frustrating, the only “compensation” offered was a $25 breakfast credit… for a breakfast that was already included. So basically, nothing. Overall, this was poor planning, poor guest consideration, and poor customer service. If a hotel chooses to host loud parties, that’s fine—but don’t pretend you can also offer quiet accommodations at the same time. And don’t disregard guest requests as if they don’t matter.

I recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Kitchener. It's right in the heart of the city. It's a 5 minute walk to Kitchener City Hall, so I was able to just walk over to Christkindl Market, day and night, to enjoy the festivities and watch people skating on the rink. Also, Victoria Park is just a couple minutes walk south of there. As far as coffee shops, you have your pick. There's Coffee Culture in the building, Timmie's right across the street, and then going west on King Street, Starbuck's is just a 5 minute walk. There are so many restaurants along King Street and the side streets also. Kitchener Farmer's Market is less than a 10-minute walk east of the hotel. Dollarama is just east of the hotel, in case you need any essentials or snacks. So for anyone coming to Kitchener for downtown events like their Bluesfest, which is FREE by the way, the Walper is a great choice!
