"Awful hotel"

2.0

Don’t waste your money with this hotel. Booked a room for the last night we were in Nassau. When we arrived at the property we were denied access by staff due to a nearby fire. I told the staff member we had a room booked and he said no one was being allowed on the property. We then booked a room at another hotel and called the hotel to request a refund. An incredibly rude woman from the hotel denied the refund and then lied about staff keeping us from coming onto the property. Spend your money elsewhere. These people are thieves.

Stayed four nights, two adults. It’s an old building but it was very clean. Not a good property if you have trouble with stairs, since most of the rooms are upstairs. There is traffic noise and you can hear the piano and diners but that’s over by 11 pm. The food is overpriced for the quality but the wine is fantastic! The property is beautiful and must have been incredible in its heyday, but is overgrown and falling apart a bit. It’s an easy walk down the hill to Bay Street but the up is a workout. The staff and service was phenomenal!

"So disappointing"

4.0

My husband and I dined at Graycliff last night. The building and decor are stunning. The gentleman host was very stern (a bit like a scary librarian). The rest of the staff was charming and lovely. I ordered the “ bits of lobster tail with cream sauce” as an appetizer and was very disappointed that the lobster was so chewy and tough that I literally could not even cut it with my knife. The flavors were good though. Then my snapper came. Cooked in plastic, honestly I thought it said parchment. I would never eat anything that had been heated up or cooked in plastic! Again the fish was so overcooked, dry and chewy. Also cooked in peppers and onions which it did not say on the menu and had I known I would have ordered some else. It was a massive disappointment. I was also told I should tour the wine cellar but they acted annoyed when I asked about seeing it. To be fair, they were very busy.

Beautiful historic hotel, excellent service. Hotel is in an isolated area away from other shops and restaurants, it requires walking along a dangerous busy street to reach the downtown. Hotel and food are fantastically expensive.

"This hotel is living on former glory- and so over promises and under-delivers badly in 2024."

4.0

The location is within walking distance of some of the downtown facilities and beaches. The staff are mostly polite and charming. The restaurant still clearly has a local caché and the pianist brings great vibes in the evening.

Unfortunately that’s where the “good” ends. Note many of the positive reviews are for the restaurant- where I enjoyed one meal. A good steak. But not a good look when the bill is $200 for one diner, one entree and side, 2 glasses of house Malbec and a bottle of still water. I notice many of the positive reviews date back to the mid 2010’s- as do the photos. The hotel is well past its sell by date and is in desperate need of refurbishment. The facilities are poor (no gym, no poolside service one of 2 days, disappointing breakfast, broken shower controls, dated and tired bedrooms, bathroom, dirty (old) soft furnishings) A lack of care around the hotel site (dumped old broken chairs, tables, things tucked away but not out of sight) seem to say they’ve given up. And you’ll need those local businesses because the facilities in the hotel are poor: The “complimentary” continental breakfast isn’t, when you are charged $20 taxes and service. Guests returning from the Dunkin or Starbucks down the road with their own coffee and breakfast says it all. You cannot credibly claim to be 5* when the facilities no longer warrant it and fixtures, fittings and overall quality are poor. It’s everywhere from leaking taps, blown lightbulbs, temperamental air conditioning and old towels. When I have to unblock the shower head due to calcification using the needle from the sewing kit, you know the care has left, and soon, all the guests will follow. The hotel may say I could or should have called for maintenance. I say the fact the room was presented this way at $600 a night shows they’ve stopped noticing. Perhaps the owners and managers need to tour some of the new local hotels to get refreshed on what good looks like.

"Exceptional Bahamas experience in stunning surroundings."

10.0

Graycliff is a beautiful historic building with exceptional character, a stunning pool, amazing wine cellar and wonderful helpful staff. It’s also located close to other historic buildings, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas and the chocolate and cigar tourist attractions. Just a very special Bahamas experience to be treasured.

"A very disappointing experience "

4.0

This is a quirky hotel; rooms are more tired boudoir than shabby chic. We were in the pool cottage set in the lush gardens and as the name suggests right by the pool. The pool is gorgeous but attracts large numbers of tourists, and the guides often stopped outside the cottage to explain loudly the pool's history. The restaurant is overpriced and not as good as it seems to think it is. My husband had to send his steak back as it was overdone. To be fair, the service was attentive and when the second steak arrived, my husband said it was as good a steak as he's had anywhere. Graycliff makes a thing of its extensive wine list but to present diners with a wine list that is over 150 pages long is ridiculous. We felt we were pushed into spending more than the wine warranted. The 'complimentary' continental breakfast was farcical. Tax and service is not included and for a bit of toast, croissant and muffin is not good value. That said the service was friendly and attentive. Graycliff have been totally unresponsive to my follow-up emails to chase a refund. $250 was taken to cover incidental expenses but we ended up settling the account on an another card and the $250 has not been refunded. I have tried to email directly (multiple times), used their website form and through booking.com but I haven't even received an acknowledgement.

Quiet location apart from a continued trail of tourists coming to look at the pool.

Graycliff still owe me $250 and haven't responded to emails - sent directly, through their website and through booking.com
