W San Francisco

Beware of the 4th floor, particularly room 410! I was supposed to stay here for 4 nights while attending a conference at the Moscone center nearby. This commanded a room price of FOUR THOUSAND dollars - yes, a grand a night. I arrived in the evening, all was well, I tossed my stuff in my room and met my colleagues for dinner. Upon returning, I noticed a significant humming, rumbling noise. Just a constant drone. I thought it was the hvac, which turned out to be off. I called down to the front desk to ask about it and to see about getting another room. I was told they were full and it wasn't possible - but I could check in the morning. I left the room to see where the noise might be coming from and the adjacent 'rooms' are marked 'equipment', which leads me to believe this is the hotel's physical plant directly next to my room. They offered to send up earplugs (for a grand a night). After a rough night's sleep, I checked again in the morning as well as later that day for another room unsuccessfully (note - the front desk showed no real interest in helping me). Fortunately, I was able to book a room for my remaining two nights at the Hilton nearby, and asked if they would allow me to checkout without penalty, which they did. The front desk clerk finally admitted that she has had at least one other person complain about this room. I should also mention that in addition to the noise, the 'window' in this room looks out to an alley with equipment crates in it and a wall. If you bend down, and crane your neck upwards, you can just see the sky. W - You KNOW this room is bad. You shouldn't sell it. You also likely had an emergency room or two available like most hotels do. This isn't the Courtyard. I expected better. Further, there was no effort to even try to make it right, maybe because I didn't kick up enough fuss - other than just leaving. Shockingly, I also didn't get the ubiquitous 'tell us about your stay' email afterwards. Interesting Attached is a decibel reading from room 410 (57db) and the same from my room at the Hilton (38db). It is a 20 decibel difference, and hospitality standards say guest rooms should be 25-30dbA with max allowed at 40. An increase of 10db sounds TWICE as loud. The stars go to Damian in the restaurant who was the most personable person in the hotel and at least made breakfast nice.

Our stay at the W was overall good. The rooms were clean, had excellent amenities (shampoo/conditioner was Davines brand), and the gym had great equipment. The reason it’s not 5 stars was the house bar/restaurant. It was beautiful, but no drink was less than $20 and the staff charged me twice which caused problems. When they removed it from my bill, they transferred the charge to another room in our party which is also incorrect. Minor inconvenience but I would’ve just appreciated more attention to detail and better service when facing incorrect billing information.

Superb in every single way. When we arrived, we were met at the front desk by Janny who gave us a seamless, informative check in. She was great, and we wish all front desk team members were as phenomenal as she was. Both Janny and Jason were great every time we stopped by the front desk for questions or information requests. Thank you! Huge props to the bar staff and valet staff. We really appreciate both teams. One of out favorite moments was hanging out with the AMAZING DJ on Thursday night. He was so fun, and let us pick which vinyls we wanted to hear him mix. So cool! Keeping the spirit of W music alive. The Managing Director of this hotel should be very proud of such an exceptional team. We cannot wait to come back.
