The Location of this hotel was great and it was walking distance from the centre of Retford

Firstly, I booked the hotel because parking was advertised here, however parking was very limited, I rang reception looking for the parking and they came and directed me to a spot on the drive which fit two cars. The rooms are a little dated, however they were okay. I didn't actually end up staying here and the reason for this was because a diesel generator was in use for the property and this was underneath the room I was staying in. When I came in from dinner my room smelled very strongly of diesel and I didn't feel comfortable staying here. I told the receptionist and he did offer to move me, however by this point I felt uncomfortable staying and had already made the decision to leave as I was a lone traveller. I tried to explain that if the generator was kicking out CO2 this could be dangerous and I hadn't spotted a CO2 alarm in the room.

The fridge in the room

The shower door detached from its rail when I moved it, almost striking me. Later that day I returned to the room to find a live slug crawling up the shower wall. The 'wardrobe' was broken and leaning sharply to one side. My room boarded an outdoor seating area for the pub portion of the hotel and this was incredibly noisy late into the night time. This happened both nights of our stay and ruined what would've been restful nights otherwise. I saw a member of staff once during our stay. There was a mobile number available to contact them otherwise but I felt very uncomfortable calling from my mobile as that would allow whoever it was I ended up reaching to have my number in return and I don't like that notion. The parking is advertised as free and it is not. I had to pay to stay in a public carpark down the road from the hotel. There was no maid/room cleaning service in sight during our stay. Further, and this is just a minor quibble - the picture of the establishment that is front and centre on the booking page was taken from the park across the street. You cannot see the generator that sits outside the building at present, nor are you given the impression the hotel is adjoining by the aforementioned intensely noisy pub. I do not recommend staying here.

The photos online are completely misleading and bear almost no resemblance to the reality. The room was tired, shabby and badly outdated, with old furniture that looked like it should have been replaced years ago. Cleanliness was also unacceptable. There were hairs on the bedding, the carpets were dirty and stained, and the whole room felt grubby and poorly maintained. The bathroom was no better, with a loose tap leaking onto the floor and a flickering light. The lack of soundproofing was another major issue. The walls are so thin that you can hear everything from the next room. Being woken at 6.30am on a Sunday by a man banging on the neighbouring door and shouting the F and C word was completely unacceptable. Overall, this hotel was poor value for money and nothing like what was advertised. It is badly maintained, poorly presented and far below the standard the photos suggest. It genuinely makes a Travelodge look like a luxury 5* hotel. I would never stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone.

The whole experience

Lovely room, clean and well equipped. Shower was great bed was comfy and all in all a really nice hotel room.

The noise from the beer garden. I know people are just having a good time and I don’t mind that one bit. But I was up early for a long drive back up home to Scotland and wanted to get a decent sleep. The noise from the beer garden made than impossible as my window was directly above it. But the layout of the hotel and bar means this is probably unavoidable.
