Guaya Hostel

Perfectly acceptable hostel. Well placed for ADO station, good breakfast, clean and comfortable. Quite peaceful too. Not a party hostel. Pool was a bonus. I see no reason not to stay here when I am in Merida again.

Staff were exceptionally friendly and kind. A good collection of other travellers were there too. It was near the bus station which is perfect for day trips or for early departures/late arrivals. I chose the location because I was taking Spanish lessons downtown and wanted to start each day with a nice walk.

Location was close to the bus station, good price for what it’s worth. We picked the only private room they had.

First of all, there were cockroaches in our room and a bunch of small flies. The white paint of the walls was coming off even such that the bedside tables were filled with pieces of paint every morning. The day we checked-in the room had a weird smell, they hadn’t opened the room for at least a week, and there are absolutely no windows. We were basically the only clients there for our 3 night stay, other than one or two other backpackers. The volunteers from Mexico City and Canada were actually nice to us. The day we checked out and came back to pick up our bags, we sat down for not even 8 minutes to take a breath and one other girl basically kicked us out telling us that we had to pay a “daypass” to stay in the premises… I found that incredibly rude and not welcoming specially from a “Hostel” whose common areas were EMPTY the entire time. I wouldn’t come back here just because of her attitude.

The closeness to the ADO Station and the volunteers working there that were super nice.

The place doesn't look like the pictures, it is veeery run down, with peeling and moldy walls and ceiling. The neighborhood is quite sketchy, looks abandoned really. The room has a big window facing a busy street which makes it very noisy. The three level bad is really bad to climb up and the mattress is horrible, you can feel the wires of the mattress against your ribs, which makes sleeping very uncomfortable. Very bad lit room, had to literally use my phone lantern to get around my stuff, even during the day. The showers need urgent maintanence, almost no water comes out. Really don't understand the top reviews here.
