Wonderland Makarora Lodge

Cosy cabin in a scenic spot on the Haast Pass.. Very friendly atmosphere in the communal kitchen and we saw the stars for the first time in the southern skies. Would recommend!

friendly host, helped out when we had problems

Our trip to South New Zealand was full of surprises. We spent ten days moving between different towns in a relatively small area, a few hours' drive from Queenstown. Makarora was one of the most interesting, but being a small town, there were not too many choices for places to stay. We chose the Wonderland Makarora Lodge for its cleanliness, access to nearby hiking, and reasonable price. We weren't disappointed. Our A-frame cottage at the Wonderland Makarora Lodge was a comfortable time trip back to the 1970s. This was the real thing. Furniture, decorations, the kitchen with its Formica everywhere, the bath with its metal shower, were wonderfully preserved experiences straight out of the past. A walking path that started right outside our cabin took us on an hour or two hike through more than one ecozone, with great birdwatching at each step. Compliments to the friendly and helpful Lodge staff.

There was probably enough beds for 6 people so it was more than enough for just the two of us. The A-frame chalets are cute. There was a great bush walk just minutes from the room.

Whatever was used to clean the tile floors left them sticky which was very unpleasant. One of the burners on the hot plate could not be turned off or heat controlled which seems very unsafe. We had to go to the communal kitchen to use the wifi and we found two dead birds that had obviously hit the window. There are decals or other methods to prevent bird strikes.
