Wonderland Makarora Lodge

Clean, everything we needed for a comfortable overnight stop, food was excellent, great location for stopover between Kokatika and Wanaka.

Fun, quite quirky accommodation in triangular wooden cabins. Nice bar- cafe and very generous helpings of food.

I stayed in the cabins/rooms called "The Stables" the shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry were all less than a minute away and were really clean. The view of the surrounding mountains and greenery were breath taking and there were some picnic benches dotted around were you could sit and admire surroundings with a cup of tea or some food. Despite feeling quite rural the wifi worked really well and I was able to call my family via whatsapp and hear them really clearly. There were loads of gorgeous native birds around too with their lovely birdsong including Kererus and Tui's. Its a great stop if you're driving down the west coast.

I think because there aren't lots of options for hotels etc along the west coast the price generally tends to be on the higher side. To be honest I thought the price for wonderland was reasonable but some might find it a bit dear. If you are planning to eat at the restaurant then don't arrive too late as I think the kitchen closes around 8pm

Location and natural setting, trees birds etc

Rather tired especially share kitchen. That was fine but cost bit high for old state. Very disappointed one could not get any info about local walks etc… was directed to jet boats etc $$$ - I know DOC office closed but just having simple DOC maps on hand would have helped especially as advertise self as gateway to aspiring NP.
