The Algonquin Resort St. Andrews by-the-Sea, Autograph Collection

We come to this hotel 2 or more times a year. This is our first visit that seemed less personal than before. As a Marriott member, we used to get a personal email asking if we had any specific requests. That didn’t happen but it didn’t bother me. But it showed in retrospect how the service has changed. We spent the evening with another couple by a fireplace. They sold our friend one Raddler and when she ordered another, they were out. The others were in storage and wouldn’t be cold on time. My husband ordered a beer but the server came back to say they were out. At breakfast time, some requested (from the menu) were sold out and not available. We even had a completely empty body wash container in the shower. It hadn’t been checked prior to our check in. The carpet had a big stain by the door. We are now being charged a resort fee in the off season but no extra services were noticed or offered. We still had a wonderful time, but this trip wasn’t the same caliber all of our other visits have been. We will stay again, but may bring our own drinks next time.

Room was very nice, staff very accommodating and central location made moving about the town very easy. We were very happy with our stay at the Algonquin.

It’s just my opinion, I’m a picky eater and the menus really were limited for my choices and I thought a bit pricey. Drinks I thought were very expensive. $18 for a single cocktail. I’m not willing to spend that much on drinks.

Location, view and beautiful room

The carpet in our room was filthy. Service mediocre as was the dining. We’ve been going there for years and everything is going downhill except for the prices. The town was the best part of the trip. We won’t be going again. So sad because for years it was wonderful. Not anymore.

Food is excellent, creative and well prepared. Waitstaff in Braxton's are friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Mattresses are very much in need of replacement. The one in our room never should have passed a housekeeping inspection, it was so badly deteriorated. After being told that our mattress would be replaced, we were then moved to another room where the mattress was marginally better. The hotel generally is starting to show lots of wear. One window mechanism was broken so the window could not be shut. Lots of chips and dings to paint and flooring. Bathroom amenities were bare and the toilet paper needed an upgrade. We have been going to the Algonquin for years, but this was disappointing. The final test: would we go back? Certainly not any time soon.

Comfortable room, friendly staff, outdoor fire pit, outstanding breakfast menu, off-season rate was very affordable.

The Algonquin Resort is a lovely old hotel that has been comfortably modernized while retaining its original charm. The rooms are large and comfortable; the bathrooms are small (not surprising given the age of the hotel) and very well appointed (heated tile floors!). Nice sized fitness center and lots of amenities we didn’t have time to use (bike rentals, tennis, etc). We enjoyed dinner at Braxton’s and s’mores by the fire. The only negative is our car was ransacked in the hotel parking lot and several things were taken (nothing major but nothing that was left out in the open either). The town of St Andrews is close by and full of cafes, restaurants and shops.
