Airport pickup was fine. Arrived at hotel, where staff speaks Portuguese and French. I was initially assigned a room, but key card did not open the door. Instead of reprogramming the key card, I was assigned me to a different room with a key lock.I locked door with key from inside, but when tried to leave, lock mechanism actually fell out of door, trapping me in room. I called down to the front desk, and eventually, someone was able to understand I was trapped and send someone who had difficulty in opening my door, but told me that the actual lock could not fixed until next day. Thus, I had to sleep in room with no lock.
After having to leave my room unlocked while I ate breakfast, I inquired about fixing the lock again and the lock was replaced. Later that evenning, when returning from dinner at an outside restaurant, my key did not open my door and everything I had brought on the trip was locked inside. Hotel staff were unable to open the door or reach their maintenance person who fixed locks. While the front desk was trying to reach him again, I was somehow able to reopen the lock. I quickly packed everything I had (but unfortunately left a hat that was not returned to me), and as I was leaving the room, the Manager, came to my room, apologized, and stated that he would get me a new and better room and buy me dinner. I thanked him, told him that I had just eaten, but really just wanted to get moved to a room that I could lock or unlock, whether I was inside or out. He agreed to buy me dinner the following night.
In the new room, which was identical to my previous room, except the air conditioning did not work as well as the unit in the original room, and the room did not have ANY water to the sink, toilet, or shower without intervention by maintenance, The next morning, I saw the manager, and he again stated that he was buying me dinner that evening.
I ate at the restaurant which was good, ordering the cheapest special of the day (a chicken breast with rice), and a bottle of water. I left a cash tip for the waiter at the restaurant. When I went to check out the next morning, the front desk had no information about the "agreement" of the manager, and I paid for my dinner so I could leave the hotel as the manager was not available.
.
FYI, as a safety issue, a key card is required to return to the lobby which could be dangerous in an emergency.
Room was small, but of adequate size. AC worked well, although I had to use my own batteries in AC remote. No in room wi fi, it was available in the lobby only. Both rooms had a balcony overlooking presidential palace. Bathroom was larger, with wasted space, and a shower enclosure that was smaller than showers found on cruise ships.
Breakfast: “Hot” items were not hot. Limited selection. However, excellent breads and pastries
As you can tell from my review, I had a truly awful hotel experience and would not recommend this hotel.
