"3.8/5 stars. It's nice. I won't be returning."

6.0

My family and I went during New Year's Eve week and stayed until January 2nd. The location is nice and secluded, I can tell during the spring and summer that it must be really nice here -- I was quickly reminded that this resort is located in North Scottsdale.... Where it is naturally cooler. It was pretty quiet for most of our stay, likely because the weather had people indoors. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. The valet were so sweet and extremely attentive. The overall service was good, but in comparison to other FS resorts I've stayed at, the service that we did receive was oftentimes missing something that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it's a level of warmth, or care that felt lacking? I'm not sure what to call it. Unlike other FS resorts, our arrival did not come with a warm towel and a welcome beverage -- which I guess I was beginning to think was standard at all FS resorts. We were fortunate to receive an "upgrade," which I had to call the front desk to understand how the upgrade was different than the room we originally booked. She kindly explained to me that the major difference was the view -- not being a mountain expert myself, I guess I could not appreciate the upgraded view, since my original booking was also described to have a desert or mountain view. Room service was always on time and cared for nicely. The cleaning crew and turn down service were also always on point! At their original kids club must also be under construction, because when I went to the kids club with my family, it seemed to be relocated to a large ballroom with games and activities spread throughout the ballroom. This is a very different experience than I had at other Four Seasons resorts, which were informal children friendly spaces, with things like small jungle gyms or fake ships with slides, and designated areas of different developmental play. Some issues I had: I contacted their messaging service a few days prior to my arrival to book dinner reservations for NYE. The person managing the messaging system said they would get back to me, and after 24 hours I still did not receive a response. After inquiring about opportunities to reserve a table for dinner on New Year's Eve, we found that all restaurants were booked for the evening. This might have not happened if the messaging service followed through with their intention to get back to me about my original inquiry for reservations. All this led to us doing in-room dining for the evening, which did not seem like a problem since the in-room dining service from the night before was just fine. We ordered a few menus items from Proof this time around, and wow! The food was so salty! I feel like the food was either double salted, or somebody accidentally knocked over the salt into all of their food. It was so salty, that my mouth was hurting while I tried to finish the rest of my dinner. For some reason, I thought this was a fluke, and thought that maybe their food was better if you ordered inside the restaurant. From my experience, I was wrong. My husband and child's food were both extremely salty, and opting for the breakfast buffet was a mistake. The buffet scrambled eggs were different consistency than the scrambled eggs that came directly from the kitchen, the meats were over salted, the French toast was stale and very difficult to slice, but the gentleman who was in charge of the buffet did a great job of keeping the area clean and caring for the guests that were retrieving their food from the buffet. TLDR (ratings out of 5): Location - 4 stars in the winter, is likely a 5 in the summer Facilities - 4 Service - 3 Valet - 5 Ambiance - 5 Food - 2 Family friendly - 4

"Incredibly rude staff and lack of resort response"

4.0

We stayed at the resort for four nights in early January. Two bad outcomes: First, we encountered an incredibly rude and supercilious valet. He argued with my wife, cut her off, and stormed away. We complained. The hotel sent us a water bottle! And there were no consequences. Later in our stay, as we pulled our car into the drop off, he was not only back at his post but proceeded to nudge fellow employees and point at my wife. Truly wretched behavior for a Four Seasons which did literally nothing about it, even after being informed of the problem employee. It tarnishes the brand. Second, as this was our first stay, we had no idea all of the rooms open onto a one-lane service alley. One cannot walk five feet without having to step aside for room service vehicles, trash pick up, house keeping, valets ferrying guests around. Our alley in Chicago - where garbage is picked up - is less congested. Scottsdale has plenty of resorts that don't get things this wrong.

"First Visit"

8.0

First time visit for my wife and I. The hotel is located in North Scottsdale, about 25 minutes north of Old Town Scottsdale. We enjoyed the more rural location. The grounds are simply spectacular. We enjoyed the desert view from our room, the trails throughout the resort and especially the nature trail that connects with the Pinnacle Peak park trail. We found the service to be mostly excellent. The Onyx Bar staff was particularly accommodating and housekeeping did a great job of getting in and out of our room when we were gone. As first time guests it was disappointing to not be offered any kind of upgrade upon check in. We likely would have been interested if it was offered. The hotel certainly did not appear to be near capacity. We also felt that the food at the resort was uneven in quality. For instance, two good meals at Proof were followed by a dinner that was sub-par. Cole slaw that was barely dressed and uninteresting, ribs that felt as though they had been reheated and a taco that was so poor in every way that we complained (which we never do). A manager intervened and one of the dishes was taken off of the check. Finally, while the room we stayed in was clean, with a terrific view, it is in need of updating. These issues notwithstanding, we had a nice stay but would want to see these things addressed before we considered returning.

"Overall Disappointing"

2.0

Overall, our stay was disappointing. We knew the resort was isolated, with nothing walkable nearby, but assumed there would be things to do at the resort other than sit at the pool or play golf. Our bad. Some landscaping and grounds improvements would go a long way in making the property more interesting to walk around and enjoy. But the most serious issue was our room having no air conditioning on the first day, despite 100° Scottsdale heat. It took several complaints before the issue was addressed, and then after being told we’d receive a text massage upon completion, we sat in the lobby for an hour waiting for word on whether the AC was fixed or if we needed to move rooms. No one ever followed up. We later learned that engineering had not communicated with the front desk, so our wait was unnecessary. The front desk manager did offer a late checkout, but given that we only managed two hours of sleep that night, it felt like an underwhelming resolution. For a property at this price point, many of the expected basics were missing. There was no welcome drink, no small touches like cookies or treats in the room, no luggage assistance, no help finding our room, keys that didn’t open the ice machine room and no turndown service. The resort layout itself is confusing and not especially attractive, with plain, identical guest room buildings scattered across the property and not numbered. The dining experiences were also uneven. The restaurants were just adequate, and we were glad to move on rather than return for another meal. At the Onyx lounge, we noticed other guests receiving amuse-bouches before they even ordered drinks. We received nothing; not even a cocktail napkin or coaster. We were offered a water bowl for our dogs, and we accepted; however, the water bowl never arrived for them. We were forced to give them water from our own water glasses. These inconsistencies made the service feel careless. While most of the staff we interacted with were pleasant, the overall experience fell far short of what we expected. Having stayed at many high-end hotels, this was our first Four Seasons stay. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we would be hard-pressed to ever consider another.
