Kumano Winery Guest House

Lovely hosts, wonderful property in a beautiful and remote location. Dinner is the highlight. Giovanni, Yutaka and team go out of their way to make your stay fantastic. Highly recommend. Not cited often, but if you are walking the Kumano Kodo, it’s an enjoyable ~3 hour hike to the Winery Guest House from Tanabe Station — and an excellent starting point for the next day to hike to Shiomi Pass and down to Takijiri before continuing on to Takahara.

Stay here if you can! 100 year old Japanese house. Owners are amazing, so kind and generous. Definitely check out their goat farm and sunset view. They cooked two of the best meals we had on our trip. Easy drive to Kumano Kodo trail.

This was the most memorable accommodation of my trip! The host family is amazing, home cooked dinner is prepared by a Michelin star chef, and my fellow travelers were wonderful human beings. There is a lovely hot tub to soak in. The hosts picked me up and dropped me off from the Kumano Kodo trail and when I arrived at the location, offered me a glass of wine and then a trip to go visit their goat farm. The home is cozy, the location is beautiful. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this location!

We had the experience of our lifetime! A true hidden gem of great hospitality, life style and culinary. The farmhouse is a beautiful traditional japanese wooden house, with a nice garden with chickens and even two baby goats, and a breathtaking viewpoint of the mountains and sea. The room was a traditional japanese room with shared bathroom and toilets, all spotless and cosy. The food was outstanding - the owner is a chef and both him and his super talented wife are making much of the products they serve by their own, such as the goat cheese and the plum wine that were served for dinner, or the jam that was served for breakfast. We had an unforgettable nine course dinner and a delicious breakfast, all home made and super fresh. The owner picked us up and drove us to the farm once we finished hiking, and dropped us on the next morning at the beginning of the next hike. We will definitely come back again!!!

Giovanni & Yukata were wonderful hosts at their beautiful property in the hills outside of Tanabe. Our stay at the Guest House was a special treat to ourselves before walking the Kumano Kodo, and it did not disappoint. From the time Yutaka picked us up at Tanabe station, Giovanni's tour around the property, drinks on the terrace as the sun set, Giovanni's amazing 5 star meals showcasing their own and local produce, our traditional room in the farmhouse and being driven to the Kumano Kodo trailhead, what a truly wonderful experience. Giovanni and Yutaka are such welcoming hosts, passionate about their lifestyle, that they are keen to share with guests. Our stay at the Guest House was a highlight of our trip.

There is a very large step down into the shower room. Only a problem if you don't expect it!
