Family of 3 adults. Consensus of opinion is that this is no longer a top-notch hotel. It's now 3½* at the most.
This used to be our favorite place on Malta. An hotel which was open, welcoming, warm and friendly atmosphere, lots of warm coloured wood. There was seen open meeting area for holiday reps and their customers. There was also an open to the roof atrium with glass ceiling
We've stayed here several times now. Last year they were refurbishing so we stayed elsewhere. This year it was available although construction work is still ongoing, adding 3 more floors to the curved Tower block area so no roof top pool and sunbathing area.
We were so disappointed.
The reception area and the Triton restaurant are still the same but get round the corner to the Tower Rooms lifts and its not welcoming at all. Even when you get out of the lifts on your floor it's the same unfriendly atmosphere.
Now it's like a sterile, closed in rabbit warren, claustrophobic and cold paint - pale and mid grey paint work all round. Acoustics are terrible.
The atrium has been built into creating more bedrooms on each floor.
The bedrooms are refurbished, but not for the better. No drawers, not a user friendly bathroom.
Disability meant asking for various aids. Toilet seat riser, shower stool, wheelchair. Toilet seat riser and shower stool were supplied without problems, however there are no grab rails in any of the bathrooms. Take your own suction grabs. The free wheelchair is only for use in the hotel. If you need one for use outside the hotel, the company they use provides one for €50 for your whole stay. However if you intend to use taxis to get about be aware that the wheelchair may not fit in the boot of the taxi. We had this issue a few times and had to ask for a smaller one. Even then it wasn't easy getting it in a car boot.
BEDROOM
Mattress - far too soft, sit in the bed rather than on it. Causes back ache.
No mattress or pillow protectors - bare mattress under the sheets - hygiene? UV torch shows horrors.
Wardrobe - small size/not enough hangers (11) for two people. More provided on request.
Drawers - only 1 on each side of the bed with space inadequate/ nowhere discreet for underwear & medication.
Bedside drawers - very small in size and extremely difficult to open and close. Pulling on the handle moves the whole unit but not the drawer.
Chairs - only two easy chairs in the room designed for sitting at a small, low coffee table. No chair high enough to sit at "dressing table"/writing desk area.
Mirror is a small cosmetic style, portable and inadequate in size, plenty of room on wall at "dressing table area" for a decent sized wall mirror.
With all other hotels we've stayed at, in multiple countries, the dressing table mirrors have been at least 6'x4' and there's been at least 4 decent sized and two smaller drawers.
Nowhere to put cases out of sight. Had to keep them behind the easy chairs by the window.
Fridge - minibar size. Litre cartoon of milk doesn't fit in the for. Need to do a lot of juggling to put own drinks in there.
Curtains - do not reach full width of the curtain rail so the room is not completely dark from the balcony light and morning sunrise. It's only a few inches/centimetres but it does make a great deal of difference.
Wind - balcony door seal inadequate, howls and whistles during the night.
Smell of drains when walking in room door. Not from the toilet itself, it's from the sink.
No room spray, next door/downstairs (?) occupant smoking on balcony, smoke getting in room.
There are several shelves in the bedroom, all open to view except, obviously, inside the wardrobe.
a. Both the top shelves, in the wardrobe and adjacent cabinet, are far too high for anyone under 5'6".
b. There are two shelves under the safe in the wardrobe. Room for three. Better still, drawers.
c. The cabinet next to the wardrobe has 3 shelves, a large chest area for extra bedding, duvets etc. but the lid of which is the bottom shelf area which is massive in height.
d. There is a long shelf underneath the dressing table surface to keep some items out of sight, but there is a ridiculous, unnecessary divider which cuts the depth in half. It hides some wiring at the back (!). Unfortunately this means that there's not enough room for the hairdryer, or other things - curling tongs, brush and comb, cosmetic bags, etc. Fortunately, it's removable and gives a whole lot more space. 2 full depth drawers would have been a much better idea.
There is also a shelf behind the door in the cabinet above the mini fridge. However it gets very warm because of it's very location. Put nothing sensitive to heat in there.
BALCONY
When there is a storm the balcony floods as there is nowhere for the water to drain away.
BATHROOM
Storage/shelves in bathroom - only 1 at the rear of the toilet, taken up by bathroom towels and spare toilet rolls. Shelf under the sink would have been ideal for personal toilet necessaries.
Not enough space by sink, big gaps at either side. Full width fitted would have been much better.
No shelf in the shower to put own specialized/medicated toiletries other than on the floor.
Shower mat is very small compared to the size of the walk-in shower, ordinary domestic in-bath rubber suction mat. Needs to be larger for safety in a wet and soapy shower.
When in use the water in the shower runs down the shower screen, onto the outside of the shower area and then out onto the bathroom floor. 10 minute shower and the towelling bath mat is sodden.
There used to be an extendable line in the shower area, so wet swimming costumes could hang to dry, now you have to dry them on the balcony.
There used to be towel rails at a decent height.
Not everyone is 6' tall. 5'2" and under stand no chance of the reaching:-
a. Hanging hooks, they're far too high and inadequate in number and location. 1 double hanging hook in shower area and 1 double hanging hook in the bedroom, by the window.
b. No hook on the back of the bathroom door for night clothes, bath robe etc.
c. No towel rail at decent height in bathroom. It's well above head height, 5'6 and under - not even extended arm reach, connecting the shower screen to the wall.
HOUSEKEEPING, WIFI, etc.
Housekeeping - 6½/10
Most days all facecloths, hand towels and bath towels were replaced, a few times left with either NO facecloths or bath towels. One day only ONE hand towel for two of us, NO face cloths, NO hand towels and NO bath towels. Had to ring reception and wait to have a shower for over an hour for them to be supplied.
On one occasion pillowcases had been removed but not replaced, had to call reception. Apparently they hadn't been sent up by the laundry.
Coffee, tea, sugar and milk substitute (not milk and not nice in tea) replenished every day. 10/10
Checked the mattresses and pillows with uv torch on first day. Yuk!
Requested mattress and pillow protectors next day - supplied.
Didn't even want to check the headboard - ignorance is bliss.
Even when floor was "cleaned" grit and hairs could be felt by bare feet and seen when the sun in the right direction.
Disability meant having to use the so called "disabled" loo on the ground floor. The toilet is extremely low, toddler height, and no grab rails means that this toilet is NOT suitable for disabled people in any way. When using this toilet it was noted that the hourly cleaning schedules were marked up for the whole day, in advance, even though there were still many, many hours left until midnight! Then the check sheet suddenly disappeared!
WI-FI
The hotel free wi-fi is erratic to say the least. It drops out frequently, especially at certain times of the day when lots of guests are accessing it. If you are streaming TV via a fire stick, the downloading cursor gets to be mesmerising and very, very frequent, if it actually loads. Do a speedtest and usually doesn't even get to 3mbps.
Pay for premium rate but be aware that some rooms need a router booster. Then you get a speedtest of 200+! Premium rate is not €5 for your whole stay as we were given to believe, it's €5 per 24 hours and you will need a user name and pass codes for every single day. Save time - pay for your full stay up front and get your pass codes for every day up front too.
SPA
If you want to use the spa services, eg massages, it's best to book before you even leave home. There is no chance of booking sessions when you get there. Hotel guests should get priority.
The stairs down to the Spa are so dangerous and continually flooded, towels in place to soak up the water but, although there is a hand rail, it is not continuous. The only lift that goes to it is between the Tower room lifts and Sakura. It's not even signed so you wouldn't know it's there. And it looks like a service lift, not clean, not like the regular lifts.
The gym itself was not well used, saw no-one in the pool. People at reception on the of chance of cancellations being turned away, no availability for the massages/treatments.
BEACH CLUB
Because the roof top amenities are no longer available the sunbathing is only available at the Beach Club pool area. Crammed.
Food and drinks service is good but a little slow because of so many people there.
Only bad complaint is the toilet area. The floor is so dangerously wet and slippery and only 2 toilet cubicles in the ladies side, (can't speak for the gents) so toilet tissue in both cubicles runs out frequently. AND the lock fails, getting locked in is no fun. Stuck in there for half an hour before any one responded to shouts for help. Took another half hour of people trying, without success, to open the lock from the outside. Maintenance guy came and had to climb a ladder to get over the door and unscrew the lock from the inside. This happened to other ladies on every occasion that we've stayed at the Preluna in the past.
On the whole these are all refurbishment complaints, however apart from a couple of niggles the staff are very friendly and happy to help sort out issues.
