Bernardus Lodge & Spa

We stayed five nights at Bernardus Lodge and Spa, and we keep a very good piece of memory of our stay in this beautiful lodge, located in a marvellous place, surrounded by the hills of Carmel Valley. Unfortunately, the beds were really to flexible, and such an hotel deserve better beds. If the restaurant for the breakfast was great, thanks to the chef and the team, we were disappointed by the quality of the meals at the restaurant in the evening. Otherwise, it is a beautiful place to stay. Thanks to Garet and Ashleig for their infos and kindness, and also to the team in charge of the vehicles and parking. Bst Rgds. Claude Cosquer.

Fantastic stay! Service was impeccable. Enjoyed the room, grounds and dining. Stayed in a room adjacent to the croquet court.

Excellent, but pricey resort in the middle of Carmel Valley. Resort fee was never mentioned during reservation process and which I had to pay at the end. Food, breakfast and drinks in the restaurant are of normal prices. Resort comprises of several buildings and mail lobby building with the restaurant.

We have a house under construction in the area that is close to Bernardus. Because it is a pretty resort, close to the house and the rooms are nice, we’ve stayed numerous times while we are in town to check on the progress. We are routinely disappointed. Across multiple visits, the front desk employees have been consistently unpleasant, condescending and uncooperative/unhelpful. When this happens with one or two people, we don’t hold it against the hotel. But when it happens repeatedly across multiple employees and stays? At that point, it’s not merely the employee(s). It’s the tone from the top that is setting the standard and that infects the duration of the stay with the feeling that you aren’t entirely welcome and are a bit of a nuisance. Want to arrange a car service? You’ll do so on your own. Need help with dinner reservations offsite? Nope. They also don’t honor their commitments around certain services, which would have been a simple matter to do, and take my word for it when I say this - you will NOT be allowed to check in prior to the 4pm time and often will be delayed well beyond that, as we have been on multiple stays. This is likely because, for a cost, the lodge offers late check out as an “extra amenity.” The late check out can go up to 2:00 pm. The lodge is then unable to turn the rooms over in time for a 4pm check-in. So they make money allowing for the late check out but incoming guests receive nothing but an insincere “we’re sorry, there is nothing we can do, the guests departed late” when they cannot check you in on time.

Stay was enjoyable as always

Bernardus is the nicest resort I've ever experienced. It's a beautiful property in Carmel Valley with gorgeous landscaping, soothing fountains and exceptional food.
