Friendly staff. Lovely gesture for our anniversary.

Heard from previous guests about the high standard of cooked breakfast. So i was a little deflated . Was very nice don't get me wrong but maybe a bigger portion with more options

Location was perfect. Room was very good. Bathroom was excellent. Breakfast was superb. Dining experience was a pleasant surprise...the food was superb.

My single bed mattress could to with replacing as it was slanting on the one side from use.

The bedrooms were a little dated

I stayed at the Prince Rupert last autumn and that time it was great. My husband and I had a really lovely double room, slept well and had a perfectly decent breakfast. All very good. So I booked again to stay with my daughter - she's at boarding school locally, in the middle of A levels and this was a treat Saturday night out for her 18th birthday. I paid £195 for a twin room and this time we stayed in room 110. The staff throughout our stay were delightful. Helpful, charming and just top rate. The room was clean and the bathroom very decent, good shower and nice shower products. The hotel is very old and there is a charm to the wandering corridors and the breakfast dining room is impressive. The breakfast was decent. We didn't have any of the cooked ones but the continental pastries and cereals were fine, and the lady running the breakfast was super. While the car park is a short walk from the hotel, the hotel manages this very well and when you're in the middle of an ancient city, I think the arrangements worked well. The location is superb, right in the middle of town and therefore very convenient. I want to make it clear that we had a really good stay last time, because I don't want this review to be unfair. I never normally write bad reviews and I think we were perhaps exceptionally unlucky this time. Please bear that in mind when reading my negative comments below, especially as I don't want to be unfair to the excellent staff. But I do think it's important to be honest.

1. The room was very small and very tired. There was only one plug, which wasn't next to the bed (unacceptable nowadays when we all have phones we rely on as clocks). One bed wouldn't go flat against the wall because the walls were at odd angles. Luxury it was not and it was not worth £195. 2. We had the worst night's sleep I have ever had in a hotel room. The beds were ok but the pillows like cardboard.We were woken at about 3.45am by other guests coming back from a party. This can happen in any hotel, but some were in the room next door to us & though they weren't loud, the walls were thin & we could hear them talking. At c5.30am the people in the room above us started moving around. The floorboards creaked and we could hear every footstep. The thudding & creaking was almost continuous. This noise was exacerbated by the curtains letting in light - although they are blackout, they only went as far as the window ledge which meant that light streamed in all around them - see photo. When you are wide awake and stressed about not sleeping, every creak, thud or hint of light makes things worse. By 6.45am, both of us had been awake for hours and my daughter was in floods of tears at the lack of sleep knowing she had to revise for exams that afternoon. Just as the people above us seemed to stop moving, around 8am, the people next door started talking and laughing. They weren't being especially loud but as we could still hear them so couldn't even get a bit of sleep at that time. It was horrific. When we checked out I asked for some money back - something I have never done before in a hotel. The manager was charming and very sympathetic, and did give me £50 back. However I think I should have had a larger refund given the shabby room, barely any sleep, and a ruined birthday for my daughter vs the £195 fee. I should stress our last stay was good & other guests checking out on Sunday told the reception they'd had a good stay.
