"Nice hotel, great location"

8.0

Now that the Sofitel has been renovated, it is a pleasant hotel, without being over the top. Elegant lobby, friendly service throughout and great location in downtown Montreal. The room was spacious, as was the bathroom, with all you need. Good sound insulation. The bar is nice with possibility to have a light meal, as long as the music isn't too loud. The equally refurbished restaurant serves as the breakfast venu, as well as for dinner. Breakfast is excellent (for dinner at this restaurant, see my separate review). We were there for 5 nights during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, so prices were very much on the high side, but that was the case at all Montreal hotels at the same time. There was some problem with the room cleaning on one day, but promptly put right.

"Exceptional customer service and quality of property …beyond all expectations!"

10.0

We usually stay at the Queen Elizabeth when in Montreal but due to an ongoing strike chose the Sofitel Montreal and are so happy that we did. The property itself is beautifully designed and maintained. We booked a junior suite and it was perfect for a couple…lots of space and beautiful views of Mount Royal. What really set the property apart was the customer service from valet to the doorman, the concierge, housekeeping staff , reception staff and the hotel manger. Everyone went out their way to provide the best in customer service that we have seen in our numerous stays at other properties. We will definitely make the Sofitel Montreal our choice in the future. Many thanks to Cristina Gonzalez and her staff!

"Beautiful Property. But ..."

6.0

First time at hotel though we are in Montreal often as daughters go to McGill. Waited for the renos to be done and the Fairmont has had a very long work stoppage! We love the location close to McGill and can walk everywhere - our favorite restaurant is Monarch in Old Montreal. Good: Amazing location. Always friendly staff to greet you at the door and in the newly renovated lobby (if you don't like teal you won't like it!). Restaurant and bar are nicely furnished with friendly and efficient staff. Had a dessert delivered shortly after our arrival wishing us a nice stay and a happy mother's day (our reason for visiting). Bad: We were in room 914 close to the elevator and the ice machine (yes it was loud). The luxury class room may have been renovated but it was hard to tell. Maybe just new furnishings. The electric outlets were old and the shower was incredibly small with only a shower head which to get water you had to reach down and pull the lever of the water spout at your feet. The black out window blind didn't fully close. The bed was comfortable at first, then we realized it sagged into the middle. There was also a mattress topper that was too small and kept moving around. And no top sheet. That is very European, but not very Canadian! Pillows were awesome though! We had the do not disturb sign out for a nap the evening we arrived. Apparently housekeeping doesn't look for such things as there was a very loud knock @ 6 pm for turn down... Our tv didn't work. We tried it more than 3 different times over a 3 hour period when we arrived. And again numerous times Sunday. The guide came on, the the screen went blue and said "not available". At 7:30 am the morning we left, the noise above us was unbearable. There was clearly work being done on the upper floor. We were checking out but if we were staying we would ask to be put on the top floor! The worst part of all of this (and note that we are very seasoned travelers) was the "breakfast" ordeal. I booked on the Accor site and added 1 breakfast (the notes says per person/stay). I wasn't sure if this was for both days, so I specifically asked at check if we had breakfast both days. The gentleman said "they will help you at the restaurant". Sunday morning I had coffee in the lobby (service stops at 8:30 am which is too early imo) waiting for my husband. We went to desk at Nini and gave our room number. She said breakfast is included and handed us the menus with no prices and not the "a la carte" menus which other people were given if breakfast wasn't included. We both enjoyed our excellent breakfasts and the service. We expected to sign a cheque (always the case at Fairmont with breakfast included) but the waiter said no need, it's covered. Monday morning we were checking out early and I figured if we didn't have breakfast included, I'd have a coffee and we would get on the road. I went to the same desk at Nini with the same woman and gave her my room number. I said I was only having coffee and would sit at the bar. She handed me the same "formula" menu as the day before and said breakfast was included. So .... I ordered my coffee and my husband met me and we had a very quick breakfast. I did not have a hot entre. When I asked server for a cheque, as was the case the day before, he said no need its covered. On check out ... I was charged an extra $93.60 for 2 breakfasts. So apparently only 2 were covered and not 4. I explained what happened and the woman said she would look into it. I was emailed while on the drive home and told there was nothing they could do as it was my fault. I sent a reply explaining again what happened and also pointed out other issues with our stay (as above). The guest relations manager emailed and asked to call me. I said sure but she was too busy the next day. She did reply to my email after her "investigation" basically blaming me for everything wrong with our stay! She the tv service was off for only an hour all weekend. So basically I lied. To be clear - our tv did not work - check out room 914. Re the location of room and noise, I should have asked for a different room (why put someone next to the ice machine and/or elevator if other rooms available?). I should have changed the number to 2 breakfasts from 1 on the app. Or have done so at check in (see above!). Not a response one would expect from a 5 star hotel. I don't want an upgrade or late check out next visit. Or a reply from the GM with his "rest assured" platitudes. My review speaks for itself and this all could have been avoided if the GR manager realized THEIR mistake and refunded me a measly $93.60 (which we def didn't even spend the final day).

"3rd Time a Charm!"

10.0

This was my third stay at this hotel but the first without any apparent indoor renovations taking place. Service was very good and the renovated restaurant Le Renoir and bar area was excellent - great friendly service and the food was great. I am starting to feel that its elegance and service is starting to surpass those of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth which has been closed for a while due to a labour dispute. Killian at the reception was extremely helpful and managed to accommodate my preferred room choice. I will be back!
