Hare & Hounds Newbury

An overnight stop returning from France. Pleasant dog friendly room with large comfy bed. Food was disappointing - starter of scallops was way overpriced for two tiny frozen overcooked scallops in a very salty sauce - too much miso and lacking in flavour. Had to wait ages for husband's fish and chips, which was okay, although a miniscule portion of mushy peas and not very nice frozen chips. Wine by the glass was expensive - buying a bottle was no better value!

Why oh why... Has it taken so long to discover this place... I was fed-up using a well known chain of hotels that had lost that extra touch of making the customer valued. what a great find... Great location, super friendly and helpful staff, very comfortable rooms and a great breakfast!

Lovely hotel, very relaxed atmosphere and vert attentive staff

We stayed last week en-route to the south coast. We are familiar with Grosvenor pubs and their offering so were looking forward to our visit. Checked in, once I’d managed to find someone to actually check us in. The room was lovely. Very comfy, spacious and a great bathroom, nice toiletries etc - all good in that dept (if a little warm). The Hare and Hounds appears to be excruciatingly understaffed. Those who were working were working incredibly hard but the strain was evident. Breakfast wasn’t great. Buffet table was pretty much empty by 8.40am and wasn’t replenished. First round of coffee were like warm. Cooked breakfasts were very unremarkable, I had smashed Avo & poached eggs. Virtually no Avo and one egg that was perfect and one that was like a bullet, on what appeared to be Ciabatta not sourdough. The full English was Anaemic and unappetising. The team were struggling with service but we didn’t wait long. Tables left uncleared throughout breakfast. Could and should be so much better, there appears to be a lack of leadership. Prices for their rooms are cheaper on Booking.com than their website? I’m not sure how that happens…

The Hare & Hounds Pub/Restaurant We booked a table here for a Sunday Lunch, but probably should have picked a later time, as when we arrived at 12.00 it seemed staff were not yet ready. It took 25 minutes just to have someone take our order and it was 45 minutes after our arrival when we were finally served. We were not in a hurry so it was not a great inconvenience, but nevertheless rather slow service. The food was beautifully presented and tasty enough. There is good parking and lots of inside and outdoor seating here, and the ambiance inside is quite nice.

My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary in January. The reason I am writing this review in August is becuse we are still non stop talking about going back. The room was beautiful and clean, the bathtub was amazing and the food was insane! We truly had the best time and the manager who served us at check-in was so kind and generous to us. Infact the service all round was perfect. Cannot WAIT to go back

It was a very hot evening but the team could not to enough to ensure that we were looked after! Sadly the room was a bit too hot to sleep as well as we liked… The night porter (didn’t manage to get her name) dropped us fresh milk at 6am on our doorstep, Olivia at reception and Gracie in the restaurant were amazing! They made our stay a lovely experience and probably one of the best breakfasts we have had! Thank you so much… hopefully we will be back ☺️ but next time with a better night sleep!

Room was ridiculously noisy with the windows open and it was far too hot with them shut. They should have a air con unit in the room rather than just a normal fan. Room wasn't serviced even though I put the thing on the door to indicate that I wanted it cleaning but it was ignored.

The added extras like complementary sloe gin, earplugs & joss sticks. However it was extremely hot but if we’d opened the window it would have been too noisy.
