"Amazing family experience"

10.0

This was our first all-inclusive experience as a family (kids are 8 and 10); I wouldn't change a thing. The resort was absolutely beautiful. We had a 2 bedroom suite, the building seemed brand new. The decor, the gardens... everything was chic and tropical and welcoming. We loved seeing iguanas and coatis every day! I found the resort to be very clean and well-kept. The pool was sprawling and had different hangout spots, which we loved. Never had an issue getting a lounger. The "lagoon" at the beach was a huge plus. Nice calm water. We snorkeled right in the lagoon and saw tons of colorful fish. The buffet restaurant is a gorgeous space with huge windows and was a pleasure to eat at every day. We loved the diversity and quality of the food. The Mexican taco station was sooo delicious. The feature evening cocktails were a nice touch, too. For a la carte restaurants, we ate at Frutos del Mar and Ku'uk. We loved them both! The food was exquisite. Frutos - the coconut shrimp was amazing. Ku'uk - the fish entree, and lava cake were unreal. I would definitely recommend this resort!

Great resort, wonderful service, delicious food! The beach sand is rough so make sure to bring water shoes. Buffet was great with tons of options - always fresh. Service was amazing - everyone was so nice and accommodating.

"Agree with the good not great reviews!"

8.0

My husband and I just recently stayed here and overall had an enjoyable time, though there is room for improvement. For context, we've stayed at many all inclusive resorts across different Caribbean islands. Overall, this resort is a big property with a lot of options (especially if you take advantage of visiting the other areas) and it is a good deal for the price. Definitely wouldn't say it is "luxury" but we have stayed at a Bahia Principe before (in DR) and it does have a consistent middle ground. Pros: - There are multiple pools to enjoy, including an adults-only infinity pool that looked out into the ocean - There were a significant amount of chairs/umbrellas at the beach and pool, but as is common at other resorts, there were a few times that we were unable to find one - I have a gluten allergy and one of the reasons I chose this resort was because of their labelled foods at the buffet. I did find this helpful and did not get sick while there (I am not celiac so cross-contamination is not an issue) and it seemed like the majority of workers knew about gluten and tried their best to accommodate - The trams that drive between the different areas were very convenient. They ran frequently and the service was helpful with things like helping us with our luggage, quickly fixing our door look when it broke, etc. - There was a nice section of the beach that was easy to enter, the water was very calm, and clear enough to see the fish - this was one of my favorite parts! Cons: - There is a significant portion of the beach that is not really accessible (large amounts of sargassum, not their fault and they were cleaning it everyday) and as others have mentioned it is rocky to enter, so definitely recommend water shoes - The food was average and relatively close to what I would expect at a resort of this caliber. While I did not get glutened and was grateful for the labels, none of our meals were super memorable. Some of the labels were definitely misplaced and could be misleading. As others have mentioned, the process to get reservations at the a la carte restaurants was unnecessarily difficult. I was able to make reservations each night, but only because I spent a fair amount of time refreshing the app everyday - The room itself was average. We got a free upgrade to a more renovated room, which had nice decor and was a good size but there was a strong sense of mildew. - While the trams were convenient and mostly timely, there was a lot more walking than expected. I would recommend asking for a room closer to the lobby area.

"Best vacation ever ❤️"

10.0

I love ❤️ love, love, this resort. It was the best resort I have been too in a long time, and would love to go again in a heart beat, The all around staff were very friendly and professional at any even time of the day or night. We were up graded to a swim up room, that was the best, I highly recommend 👍 The food at both the buffet and at the private restaurants were top notch 👌 Thank-you, Bahia Principe at the Akumal for making our vacation memorable 💖 😍

"Good, but not great"

6.0

We just came back from Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal and it was a good stay but you get better value in other resorts for the same price. First the great: The location is beautiful and the resort is very well maintained and very clean, our rooms were fully renovated and honestly great, everything worked as expected in a 5 star resort. Note, You do need water shoes for the beach as there are many rocks in the water, and everything is very spread out. They use trolley system to move people around which worked well, but expect a lot of walking here. The service and staff was really good and friendly, but we did have better service at other 5 star resorts. Most notable, there is no service at the beach here, and pool service is very limited. Now not so great: The food at buffet is generally good, but there are not a lot of options here and things frequently run out, in other resorts they usually have different cuisine nights but not here it's all the same Mexican night every night with half as many options as we experienced in other 5 star resorts. Now the bad: A la carte reservation system is honestly a bad joke, read other reviews as it's all true, we managed to get 3 out of 6 nights reserved and we booked 9 days ahead of arrival at the resort, yes 9 days ahead! In fact, I recommend camping in front of computer at midnight as the clock turns to 10 days in advance (earliest you can check in and reserve), once it's 12:01am 10 days ahead who knows maybe you'll get in to what you want. If you don't do this well ahead of your arrival then expect to be stuck with only buffets unless you get lucky and someone cancels, or you don't mind eating at 9:30pm. The restaurants that we truly wanted were fully booked 9 days in advance! So we went with what was available. Having said this, the food and service were great when we were at those that we managed to book. I just couldn't comprehend fully booked restaurants issue, but when we were there they were running at maybe 40% of capacity, but fully booked 9 days in advance of arrival? What's going on here?! For us the worst were the bars, the bars are a 3 star experience, there is no premium alcohols (Jack Daniels or Johnny Black etc.) available here at all even though it's listed on lobby bar menu, even lower shelf Johnny Walker Red Label or Jim Beam, each bar had 1 bottle a day per entire resort! And when it ran out they were out and you were out of luck! Expect only bottom shelf local alcohol here. All of this would be fine... in a non luxury resort...In conclusion, we did have a good time here, but I feel like complete experience was not worth the price, and for sure not a "luxury" experience like you would expect it to be, and for these reason we will not be back.

"BUFFET FOOD NOT SERVED HOT!"

8.0

Food in the buffets need to be displayed hot, not cool. The a la carte meals however, were excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed our 18 night stay in Mexico. Our 2nd visit. Very hot at 30 degrees nearly every day & sometimes reached 35 degrees. Beautiful complex of five resorts in one. So plenty of free activities & events to take part in.

"À la carte restaurants rarely available"

6.0

We have recently returned from the Bahai Principe Luxury Akumal hotel after a 2 week all inclusive holiday with Tui. First of all, the hotel ( & sister hotels) are very impressive from a facilities perspective. The staff are extremely accommodating & friendly in all sites. And the grounds and rooms are beautifully kept. We booked this particular hotel as it was advised as having “unlimited access” to all the restaurants, which was important to us & we were advised to book in advance via the Bahia app 10 days before we arrived. This proved to be practically impossible. We ended up eating in 4 restaurants out of 14 nights, after trying numerous times via the app & in the hotel to book. This led to a very frustrating & disappointing dining experience as the food in the buffet restaurant was “just”adequate & couldn’t be compared to an À la carte experience! Please also be aware that some sister hotels are adults only which presents in a more lively, loud party atmosphere. Our experience of the country was lovely but please do your research re each hotel and what exactly is advertised. Also, as a final note, our rep within the hotel was unable to help our issue whilst we were on holiday. We were also aware that we were not the only clients complaining on this subject.

"I have no idea why this place gets good reviews"

2.0

We were at the resort with friends recently and we could not figure out why everyone raved about this place on Tripadvisor. It is not a nice place. It is very old and very dirty. We were there for ten days and the pool was not cleaned once. There are rodents, animals and birds in the restaurants. The resort is very old and in poor repair. The roof leaks with blue tarps everywhere trying to stop it. Like most Mexican resorts, the staff are wonderful. However, this place is extremely understaffed. One person manning the pool bar with a line up all day. If someone spills a drink on the pool deck it is there for days. They allow people to smoke around the pool and there are cigarette butts on the ground. Our room was very dated and the bed was decades old with springs sticking out. Extremely uncomfortable. Most days the room was cleaned but the water and coffee were rarely replenished. Hot water was always a problem. Either none at all or a long wait for it. We're not normally complainers and we have stayed at dozens of Mexican resorts and have not had such a bad experience as this dump. Add onto this, the ridiculous app that you have to use to ask for towels or service. It is also the only way to book ala carte restaurants. Everyone we spoke to complained about the process. I'm not overly interested in food, but it was poor and the buffet was so crowded you had to line up for everything and often there was a limited quantity of food, so if you are not there early you are eating everyone's scraps. The ala carte restaurants were mediocre at best. I really don't know what people see in this place. It is definitely not "Luxury" or even remotely five star.
