Golden Chain Motel

This place needs major improvements. Bathroom towels were probably about 20 years old and were low quality. No soap in bathroom to wash hands. Slept in a bed with no fitted sheet; flat sheet used instead. Seriously?? the only thing going for this place is that it was clean and that is only reason I rated it two points. My suggestion is don't waste your money. Will not be coming back here. Owners should really have more respect for their customers.

My fiance and I stayed there because there were no other places with rooms. The man at the front desk was SO RUDE.. HE dis not make us feel welcome at all. I do have to say though, we had heard that the rooms were mediocre when not came to cleanliness. The day we checked in, our room was OK. I had to ask the young girl that was cleaning for a pillow case without stains. The next day, there was another cleaning lady. She was smiling, friendly, and when we were out, she cleaned our room. When we returned, I HONESTLY THOUGHT I WAA IN THE WRONG ROOM!!! It was superbly clean, smelled fresh instead of musky. The sheets and pillow cases were basically new as far as I could tell. The bathroom was impeccable. We will stay there again, but only because of cleaning lady number 2. We think her name is Tina or something g like that, but she has short dark hair and a smile you won't forget.. it's only because of her that we would return for another stay. But if they would get rid of that obnoxious man running the office, they would probably get better reviews.

Accommodating, Incredibly Friendly, Super Professional management made us feel right at home ensuring our stay was more than satisfactory. Coffee in the lobby early every morning right on schedule; greeted by cheerful, smiling staff members. Pool and outdoor seating areas offered a pleasant respite from busy days. Management keeps the place incredibly safe and secure of riffraff types. We actually got to "stop and smell the roses" as someone has taken great care with their cultivation. Rooms are a good size, clean, and shower preasure and temperature were perfect and consistent. My only suggestion would be to update with modern, contemporary bedding. Still, it was very comfortable and conveniently located. We'd definitely stay here again!!! We're going to miss the staff for sure... great people!!

Sheets, and bathroom were clean thank god. This place is so run down and needs major improvements. Paper thin pillows, towels in bathroom were below dollar store towel grade. There was no soap in bathroom. They advertise they have pastries and coffee but when I went to the room they only had watered down coffee, no pastries. Moldings and weather striping falling apart. Everything was dated and just borderline unsafe. Hole in bathroom ceilings. Cost $109.00 for this disaster of a room. I have never given a negative review until this one. Place was clean just ancient. Won't be back unfortunately.

Our stay was much better this time around. It seems they are doing some upgrades. WiFi was decent and they just got Direct TV, so the TV was good. It was quiet with no problems at all. John, the manager was super and made sure our stay was right on. The only drawback was it seems they still have monthly tenants. They stand out front and smoke and act like they own the place. But all and all not the scary Bates Motel anymore.

This motel is run by John Boyd, who is the "manager". He is a rude and an unfriendly individual. Do you know you can't have visitors after 7 pm, if you are staying at this "motel". No visitors in morning either. The manager did nothing but harass me when my spouse arrived after 7 and he enters customers rooms when they are not there . He sits outside and smokes weed at night. He is so disgusting! It is a bad place to stay, go to the Northern Queen Inn in Nevada City instead. Much nicer and customer friendly.

I always provide an honest account of my stays and I will do the same now. This place used to be a gem of the foothills and a very nice place to stay in the 80s. I grew up in Grass Valley and know the area well. I brought my family here based on my recollection from the past. I really should have paid closer attention to the reviews. Check in was fine, met Johnny the manager, he seemed nice and personable. We had two adjoining rooms and at first glance seemed clean but dated. We went out on the town and returned about 10pm. When we pulled into the parking lot we noticed about 10 people sitting on a bench smoking weed and the manager was with them. When we returned to our rooms we found the TV's didn't work. We asked for extra towels, with 4 teen girls with us they are needed. We were told that there would be a 5.00 charge for more towels, really???? The rooms are old and have a funky smell. It just boils down to you get what you pay for. Go into town and pay an extra 50.00 for room and be much happier. Plus in the back units it seems to have log term residents with BBQ s and junk in front of the units. The manager seems to creep people out, he seemed nice to us but likes to walk his dog up and down the motel all night long, weird?? We will never stay here again and strongly urge people to heed the warnings about this place. Its a shame, could be a gem.

Absolutely the dirtiest place we've stayed at. Being old cannot be an excuse, it can be a charm if the place is cleared and maintained well. Stains everywhere...on carpet, curtains, mattresses...even towels looked brownish before use. Found trash under the bed. Holes on blankets. People smoked right outside of our door, smoke kept coming inside from front door gap. Walls were literally paper thin, we could hear everything from both sides. Huge mistake that we booked the place for two nights...our poor kids had to stay motionless on bed with minimum contacts to anything inside the room. $100/night is a ripoff. Grass Valley is one of our favorite places to visit in Northern Cali, but too bad this place added such a huge negative impression to the lovely town.

We paid for a two week stay but left early. The manager would not allow children to play in the grassy park area, spied upon all activities and intruded into every aspect of our stay. Attempted to keep our refund and entered our room multiple times while we were away on business to look through our belongings. Called the police when I hung a self made do not disturb sign on the door. He sits outside at the picnic area all night and watches the rooms. He is a pervert.

This truly is the Bates Motel. I booked through Expedia. They stated that I had to pay in advance. So trusting Expedia I paid $700.00 for two rooms 3 nights. When we arrived the place was very dirty and looked unsafe as the staff seemed out of it. My family did not want to stay so I called and cancelled by leaving a message. We went into town and stayed at the Holiday Inn which was about the same price. When I got home, I see where they had charged my credit card. I called Expedia and they said that the owner Bob refused to give me my money back. So don't trust this place or Expedia.
