"20-Year Loyal Guest Charged $500 for Something That Never Happened"

I've carried a Marriott loyalty membership for over 20 years. In my years as a traveling executive I averaged 70โ€“90 nights a year at Marriott properties. I know what good hospitality looks likeโ€”this was the opposite. My wife and I booked the Marriott Sugar Land for Easter weekend. Early Easter morning we were startled awake at 6 AM by Sugar Land police pounding on the door across the hall, responding to a domestic violence call. Unsettling, but not entirely within the hotel's control. What happened next, however, was entirely within their controlโ€”and inexcusable. After checkout I received an email notifying me that $500 had been charged to my card because an in-room detection device allegedly flagged smoking or vaping. No one called. No one knocked on our door to ask. No investigation of any kind. Just a unilateral $500 charge delivered by emailโ€”an email that could easily have landed in spam. Let me be clear: my wife and I have never smoked or vaped in our lives. Not in that room. Not anywhere. When I contacted front desk supervisor Karya Scott, who had sent the notification, she was completely indifferent. No apology, no willingness to review the situation, nothing. Future guests should know these in-room sensors are not foolproof, and when they produce a false reading, this hotel's approach is to charge first and never ask questions. That's not a hospitality policyโ€”that's a revenue grab. After two decades and hundreds of nights with Marriott, I won't be returning to this location and am seriously reconsidering the brand entirely.

My corner suite was not a corner suite. It was the last suite at the end of the hall but not triangular as expected when its listed as an executive cornices suite

"Great front desk service."

We arrived at the hotel about 10pm on a Saturday night with no reservations. I was having trouble using my Bonvoy points on the app and website to book a room and then was on hold on the phone for thirty minutes. This situation was very frustrating. Brandon at the front desk was extremely patient and helpful. I ended up having a great stay and enjoying the local area thanks to Brandon being a top notch employee and representing the Marriott brand well.

Great experience at the Houston Marriott Sugar Land. The hotel is comfortable, clean, and very well located. The staff was excellent, and Derek was especially amazing โ€” very polite, kind, and professional throughout my stay. He really made the experience even better. I would definitely come back!
