"Poor conditions"

4.0

Overall the room was poor. Bathroom had mold growing. Taking a shower a huge black spider visited me. The floor by the outside door was soaked. The WiFi worked on my phone, but not my laptop. The overall cleanness of the room was poor. The floor you could tell it was vacuum, but the carpet by the outside door was darker then the rest (now I knew why). The walls desperately need a new coat of paint. The bathroom is desperately in need of an update. I do not like to give a bad report to someone unless it is needed. I am afraid it is really needed here.

"The Shining Movie Set? Icky. Icky. Just not a good experience at all."

2.0

This whole experience reminded our family of the movie The Shining. Dirty sheets with blood on them, hot tub with no bubbles/jets, black mold on the fan above the pool, musty smell to our room, run down grounds (old tennis court) that felt like a scary movie set, creepy people hanging outside barefooted, a continental breakfast (should not be called that) that was slim pickings, and just an overall run down facility. While the staff was super nice, and I realize you get what you pay for (it was much cheaper than other hotels in the area)...the online site where we booked this hotel made it sound like it has things it no longer can provide. To me that is false advertising. I just don't know if this place should really be open for business (health hazard and such). I realize it was once a grand hotel, but today it seems like Jack Nicholson (The Shining) should be around one of the corners at any minute. Maybe it was the 1973 decor, but I felt freaked out the entire time I was there and could not wait to leave. My kids did not want to sleep and got scared in the middle of the night when they discovered the blood on their sheets. We won't be back and I will be surprised if the place will be open in a year. The key pad locks to the outside did not work and anyone could enter the building at any time. I am not typically a negative person and I am all for seeing a business find success. It will take a lot of money and elbow grease to fix all of this hotel's issues. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I found the experience pretty bad. Still think the staff was very polite and kind, and I wish the owners all the best in renovating this place before its doors are closed due to all of the above. Staff very friendly. The gal was great and the man was also nice. I did not want to complain to them because they were so nice. I just wanted to leave. In hindsight I would have gotten a discount.

"Only if it's your last resort...."

4.0

Pretty bad - outdated, in disrepair, pool water cloudy/questionable, bfast; toaster w/ bread, dry cereal, juice/milk/coffee & Little Debbie bfast cakes. Noisy air conditioner, thread bare sheets. Sketchy Wi-Fi. Pros = a working ice maker, plenty of towels, pleasant staff. The place kind of looks ready for demolition. For us, it was this or a $200 smoking room miles away. With a sense a humor, we got through it. We paid $65. If you an get it for under $50, you'll feel less taken.

"Health Hazard"

2.0

Stay as far away from this hotel as possible! It is infested with black mold and presents a major health hazard. Management and the parent company (Vantage Hospitality) have been made aware of the problem many times and won't fix it, they just wipe visible mold away. We had over 10 rooms booked over a 3 day period and every single one of them was disgusting. Not only mold, but dirty, smelly, hard and broken mattresses, sheets that don't fit, broken sinks and tubs, water damage throughout the hotel, broken window in the pool area, and smoking in the bar (it's illegal to smoke in any public building in Iowa).

"Dirty, Moldy, And Completely Outdated"

2.0

This was, without a doubt, the most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in. There was mold on the walls of our room, the mattress was stained, the bathroom was dirty, the wall paper was peeling off. We stayed here for a family wedding and everyone reported the same issues. Walking across the carpet in white socks will quickly turn your socks brown. I could feel every spring in the mattress. The whole room felt musty and damp. We had to switch rooms and request one "without mold", as did our other family members. "Continental breakfast" was coffee, pre-packaged Little Debbie pastries, and toast. (No bagels, eggs, yogurt, fresh fruit, pancakes, biscuits and gravy... We left and went out to eat for breakfast.) There is a reason the rooms are so cheap. I am amazed that the health inspector hasn't shut this place down. Would pay $100 more/night to stay ANYWHERE but here.

"Stay Away!"

2.0

We checked in and went to our room. Upon opening the door we noticed the small refrigerator pulled away from the wall unplugged with the door hanging open. The wall below the window looked like an accordion from water damage. The wooden chair at the desk was broken. My wife called me into the bathroom because the drain plug for the tub along with the linkage was pulled out and laying on the tub floor. Then I looked at the edge of the tub and saw pubic hairs. That was enough for us! I told the front desk clerk that we would not be staying in this hotel.

"If you have any other choice.... don't stay here."

2.0

On a our recent trip to Iowa for an event we stayed in Waverly. We had stayed in this hotel two years ago and although it was outdated it was clean. However our recent stay was terrible. The check-in process was strange given that they had to swipe the card multiple times because "the machine doesn't always work". The room itself was extremely dirty. One of the lamps in the room had been snapped in off and the bulb and wrires were hanging from it. Despite some poorly written instructions we couldn't get the shower to work. Both beds had significant stains on the sheets (some looked fresh) so we slept in our clothes. The common areas were also poorly kept; shattered windows in the pool area, hot tubs not working, holes in the walls and ceiling, etc. When we visit Waverly again we will not be staying here again.

"Nails on the steps from being run down my son cut his foot."

2.0

We stayed here for two days with my kids. We rented two rooms for the two nights. The rooms were dirty and the bedding was stained. When we were going down the steps to go to the pool my son stepped on a nail and cut his heel and foot. I went to get a Band-Aid from the front desk and they did nothing. They gave him a band aid and acted like it was our fault. I was furious and if I could of checked out right then and there I would have. They also did not close the pool area down to inspect this. If it were me I would of closed the area down and made sure there was no blood spill not to mention check to see where the nail was.

"Back in time"

8.0

I stayed at this hotel with my family a few months ago and it was so fun! It is definitely 70s and you can tell that it used to be a popular destination for people in the 1970s. The atmosphere was really cool. At the pool you could basically see the spirits of people who had stayed there before. My family enjoyed it. Although, some of them had Asian beetles in their rooms. The pool was nice but the hot tub didn't work. It was still hot though.

"Broken down and dangerous"

2.0

Mattresses were hard as rocks and at least 40 years old, bottom sheet was a flat sheet tucked in, beedings were old, stained, and patched. One hot tub has been out of order for years, the other one was colder than the pool. There was a large, shattered pane of glass in the pool area, one of the emergency exits was blocked, the other, to the restroom, was locked. The shower in the pool area doesn't work. There is no restaurant on-site, though the website still advertises it. The in room directory still boasts the steakhouse, and the buffet, both which have been closed 15 years. I wouldn't pay $20 for an entire weekend at this hotel.
