Shoreline Inn & Conference Center, an Ascend Collection Hotel

From the staff to the facility all was top notch well done

Much of the staff were very nice and accommodating. The location on the lake is beautiful. It is near downtown Muskegon, which is thriving with many new restaurants and things to do. The pool and hot tub were the best part of our stay for the days it did not have to close because of misuse.

The first room that we were put in was not cleaned from a party the night before. There was all types of damage including a flooded floor and urine in the corners and tile floor. The smell when we walked in was horrible. We were moved to a new room, but it was really run down. There was a very noticeable smell of cigarettes when the sun was warming this room. The ceiling is stained and the curtains are filthy. There many things are broken. The vents are all falling off, corners of furniture are nicked and scratched. The front of the toilet was even broken. They don’t even have real coffee cups anymore. I had to go and buy some after we used our two paper cups that came with the room. In the three days we stayed here we did not see security. They seem to only have cameras on the first floor. We did not have a single night that we were not woken up by music or yelling in the middle of the night. The last morning of our stay had ambulances there at 4am after people got out of hand. It seems like this place is taken over by a younger crowd who are using this place party. We have stayed in this hotel many times over the last 20 years. It was a great place to stay. If I had not had great experiences here in the past, we would have switched hotels right away. It was really shocking to see the direction that this place is headed. I regret not taking pictures of the disrepair in our room and the hotel in general, but it’s very apparent when you walk in a room. My hope in writing this review is that it is noticed by someone who will take note and do something to stop the decline of this once lovely hotel.

Staying at the Shoreline Hotel felt less like checking into a hotel and more like stepping into a time capsule — unfortunately, not the charming kind. The building and rooms are unbelievably old. Not “classic” old, not “vintage” old, but “has anything been updated this century?” old. Cleanliness was another surprise: unpleasant smells, questionable hygiene, and an overall feeling that housekeeping may also be part of the historical experience. Our booking clearly included breakfast. However, upon arrival, the hotel simply refused to provide it. No explanation, no solution — just a firm “no,” which was impressive in its simplicity. We then asked for a power adapter. As an international chain hotel, one might assume this would be a basic item. Instead, we were offered heartfelt apologies (many of them) and two creative alternatives: 1. Use their bar’s only slow USB port. 2. Walk to a gas station and buy one ourselves. For a hotel that welcomes guests from around the world, it was fascinating to discover that international travelers are apparently expected to be fully self-powered. In summary, if you enjoy old buildings, poor hygiene, missing services you already paid for, and a strong emphasis on apologies rather than solutions — this hotel might be for you. Otherwise, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

Location to downtown, hotel had charm because of age but still kept up to date. Room was spacious as well as bathroom. Very quiet at night.

There were absolutely no hooks or shelves to hang or set anything down in the bathroom. We had to sacrifice a clean towel and spread it out on the floor to set our clean clothes and toiletries.
