The Runnymede on Thames Hotel and Spa

No idea how this place gets away with the description of "upmarket" or "luxury". My room was in the 1990's external prison block outside of the main hotel that's just been refurbished. The bed was made from 2 beds pushed together, so you fall into the gap between then. The wardrobe doors had come off the runners and wouldn't open or close properly, the bathroom was small, tatty and had a shower over a tiny bathtub. The ventilation in the bathroom didn't work and the air conditioning in the room just seems to blow lukewarm air into the room at different speeds, loudly. The breakfast is the same as you'd find in a Premier Inn, but for some reason they charge for some coffees and teas. Couldn't use the spa because you aren't allowed to after the check out time of 11am. The price tag for this place is an absolute scandal, I'd never stay here again.

2nd time staying here, paid for a riverview room but barely saw any river, just the lock. Bit of a rip off. Breakfast was amazing as was the hotel itself. Really nice and relaxing. Lots of staff but not very attentive around the bar area.

Caveat this review with the fact that the hotel is currently undergoing substantial renovations. Arrived to find extremely busy reception and lounge area - I asked if they had an event which they said they didn't. There was no where to sit whilst awaiting check in to open in an hours time. Room looked a little worn with aging decoration (see photos). Powerful shower. Good air conditioning in the hot weather but a little noisy. Lovely position on the river - it's beautiful to sit outside in the sun and watch the boats sail past and use the nearby lock. Good quality and volume of breakfast. Outdoor pool also lovely.

The building is being renovated. Scaffolding and machinery. The first room shown - the superior room - looked out onto a grey wall, therefore dark. Requested another room - a standard so smaller - but balcony looking over the river. The receptionist was very understanding and polite. Breakfast amazing.

Rooms very clean and spacious. Lots of building work and noise from nearby motorway. Lovely pool outside and inside. Beautiful out the back by the river and a lovely walk to see the posh houses.

Warning - undergoing renovations at the moment Reception staff very helpful Had to change room as superior room booked looked out onto grey concrete wall and room too dark. Second room standard but had balcony overlooking the river. Superb. Breakfast excellent.
