Fairfield Inn & Suites Valparaiso

We stayed here for one night on a road trip. We used Marriott points to book; those made this a relatively inexpensive stay so I can't comment on cash value. The hotel is a little tired and run-down, but it does its best. The king-size bed we had was very comfortable, the bathroom/shower were small but clean and worked well. Breakfast was included, and it had multiple hot options available in the morning. There was also free popcorn available at night. Note that it's on a fairly busy road, so I wouldn't expect to walk to anything nearby, we used our car. I wouldn't call this a fancy hotel, but it worked fine for our purposes, and I'd stay again.

We drove over 4 hours for a wedding. I had called earlier in the week to see about getting an early check in because check in was at 3 and the wedding was at 4. The guy was nice and said to call the night before but it shouldn’t be a problem. I called the night before and spoke to a very kind girl who said that she would put it in the system and that she can almost guarantee we’d get it but to call back the next morning when we were in 2 hours away to let them know we were coming. I called on our way and spoke to someone who I’m assuming is a manager. She was extremely rude and said they do not offer early check ins at all. I explained to her that the two previous employees I spoke to said they do and that it shouldn’t be a problem. She said that’s not true and that she would speak to those employees. She did not want to give us an early check in at all and was very rude to me on the phone, explaining that checkout is at noon and there is no way she could clean all of those rooms in time for me to check in early. She eventually said that she would get my number just in case a room is available but kept repeating that the earliest she could help “if I can help at all” would be at 2 pm. I told her that was fine and sure enough, she called at exactly 2 pm on the dot. The hotel itself was decently nice. The bathrooms hadn’t fully been cleaned all the way and the shower didn’t work at all. The walls were paper thin so we heard everything all night. I wouldn’t recommend.

This hotel is old and needs renovated. When we checked in we got 2 keys. One worked the other didn’t. Walked into the room the room was musty smelling. The king bed looked like kids were sleeping under the covers it was so lumpy. The old Panasonic non smart TV didn’t work. The bathroom looked dirty. The price was ridiculous at 210.00, but it’s close to Valpo University so they think they can get it. We decided we weren’t staying. Went down and explained nicely that we couldn’t stay here. Course she wanted to know why. I told her key didn’t work. She looked at the key and said did I give this to you. We said yes. Her reply was this isn’t one of our keys. I have no idea what Fairfield it belonged too. They did refund our money. I have a feeling we weren’t the first one to walk out. I’m a Marriott Bonvoy member very disappointed in this property.

The night before I stayed here I stayed at a place in portage that the person above me was stomping and the person next to me was smoking weed and coughing nonstop till 3am. Then I stay here which was better but the person above me wasn’t quiet at all but thankfully stopped at 12am. The room felt very humid and had a bit of a mildew smell. I got the room at the end of the hall next to the outside door which means hearing the door slam. Definitely not coming back.

First impression, this is a lower level Marriott property, that is in desperate need of upgrades….it’s like they put lipstick on a pig. However, the staff from the front desk to the lady who sits out breakfast to the cleaning ladies were friendly and hard working. The rooms were extremely dated, but clean! The free breakfast included cage free eggs, and other fresh options! There was a supply of free water bottles put in a cooler every afternoon! Also fresh coffee, tea and cocoa station available 24 hours. I really feel like everyone there is doing the best they can with what they have to work with. The pool looks as though it may need to be resurfaced or has an algae problem, I would not get in it for sure. The hotel needs immediate upgrades to the elevator, popcorn ceilings and rooms painted to match the carpet, which seems to be newer. The furniture is obviously extremely dated but the bedding was very clean and the pillows comfy. Overall, you get what you pay for and while the building needs work, the staff are all gems! Didn’t love the location, I would request a room on the backside as it was very loud in our room on the main road! Also being between a gas station and a Bob Evans wasn’t my jam, but I knew this when I made the reservation.
