Minshuku Sumiya

The best location to base ourselves and explore the surrounding areas. We loved being able to use the river bed onsens which was surreal. The bus stop to Kii-Katsuura was just outside the minshuku and it was just as easy to head to Yunomine Onsen town with a bus also, from the opposite side of the road. The dinner was exceptional and so was the breakfast and lunch bento boxes which we asked for to take on our bus trip. Overall, it was the best stay so far on our Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trek.

Great food provided by the hosts (for pay). It was fun to dig out a pool on the riverbank and soak in the hot springs.

Kawayu onsen est un endroit magique, et Sumiya une très sympathique guest house face à la rivière. Le dîner était délicieux et copieux.

Comme souvent dans les guest house, on est réveillé par le bruit des premiers levés...

El anfitrión es maravilloso! Te ayuda con todo y creó un lugar hermoso. La habitación es perfecta y tiene todo. La vista es hermosa, la cama cómoda y está al lado del baño termal en el río. Fue mi lugar favorito de todo el viaje! Las personas siempre hacen la diferencia, este anfitrión hizo que me sintiera en casa! El mejor lugar de Japón!!

길을 걸으면서 하루 머물렀습니다. 친절한 주인과 잘 준비된 식사로 인해 즐거운 숙박을 했습니다. 다시 뵙기를 기대합니다. 감사합니다.

We stayed here on our first night of the Kumano Kodo trail. The house is basic but nice and clean, the rooms are actually pretty big and the futon beds are comfortable. Yes, the shower/ bathroom facilities could use some work but they were clean and there was enough facilities across 2 floors for everyone staying there. What was outstanding though was Kohei’s attention & support: we asked for bikes and we were able to use his, he has bathrobes & slippers available to go use the natural river onsen, and the meals were delicious(dinner, breakfast and the lunch box!). He also helped us figure out luggage transport and the bus schedule. There was also an AC in the room which was a nice add-on and a massage chair in the lobby.

The toilets were a little smelly even though they were clearly freshly cleaned. Hopefully with the general renovation this will be fixed.
