Savegre Hotel Natural Reserve & Spa

Our guide Marino made the trip for us. My daughter had visited Costa Rica 10 times and never witnessed a quetzals. With Marino as her guide she saw and photographed this elusive beautiful bird. Marino made us feel like family. He is a man steeped in the rich pioneer history of the valley. One of the best birding lodges in Costa Rica. Food is very good, beautiful grounds , specially for senior travellers is very recommended mostly because its an easy walk from the rooms to the restaurant. Heating units are very important, some nights could be cold at night. If you are looking for birds, I highly recommend to do the trails above the lodge, you can walk but is very steep, if you dont have a 4wd car they provide transportation to the trails back and forth We had 2 quetzals around the hotel grounds, long tailed silky flycatchers, sulphur winged parakeets and more good species here.

These rooms are rustic bungalows with heaters. Tap water is safe to drink. Good water pressure and hot water in shower. Room 108 has mildew smell yet mold not in visual evidence. Step down into shower/ bath tub. Nice light fixtures and lighting. Fast housekeeping service to the room. Separate review of Las Bromelias Restaurant.

The hotel is very well kept as the surroundings. The food selection is very good and the prices are fair. There are a lot of activities for guests such as bird watching, hiking trails, horseback riding. There is also a Spa that offers diverse services. Excellent place to relax by the River Savegre. I would definitely come back.

Perfect experience. Room , the gardens, the serenity, the service, the restaurant. Absolutely worth the visit. They arranged a Quetzal viewing tour which was very successful. The public road down to the hotel is ok but needs to be driven carefully.

We really enjoyed the location of the Savegre hotel along the river. The views in the cloud forest were incredible. The rooms are all set amongst the ground and are fine with good wi-fi. The feeders scattered around attract alot of beautiful birds including the elusive quetzel. The breakfast was a little disappointing but we really enjoyed the trout at dinner. Our only gripe was the number of coaches using this hotel. They made the guiding for the quetzal like a fight on the opening day of the sales!! Pushing and racing around for the best spot to see the bird! This was very unpleasant which is a shame as there is so much which is good about the place.Im afraid that the size of the hotel would prevent me from returning.

What an amazing place! This is definitely the place to relax or spend a romantic holiday. The grounds are stunning and if you're a birder, be prepared to see lots! There's a beautiful river that runs along the property and numerous hiking trails. Oh, and there's even a spa.

Savegre is our favorite place to visit and stay in Costa Rica. In the 9 years since our last visit it has been significantly redone. Bigger restaurant, changes to the rods and trails, more cabins. It is a very good place to stay with excellent food, clean and well appointed cabins/rooms. In the past there was a lot of birding to be done on the grounds. This seems to have shifted some to other locations. Wonderful and very helpful staff. The improved roads into the Valley have improved access, especially for over the weekend visitors. A bit more crowded overall.

This is our 2nd year visiting here. It is a lovely very well maintained lodge. The staff is very accommodating. You don’t need to ask twice for anything. Our room was clean and the heat worked well. Good water pressure. The gardens are full of beautiful flowers and birds at every turn. Even a hummer on a nest within easy view. We did a birding tour with Raul. He is amazing at finding birds. The quetzal was hard to find. Raul never gave up and we were blessed with a beautiful sighting. Meals are well prepared and tasty. Large portions.

Disappointed with the restaurant. Slow service, chicken fajitas served as chicken with mashed potatoes. Room as advertised but minor problems not addressed as promised by reception. Grounds are very pleasant with nicely laid out gardens.
