"Lovely location."

10.0

Stayed here for two nights as part of our Exodus Discover Costa Rica tour. A gorgeous location next to a fast flowing river. Cool as it's mountainous, and during our stay it was also rainy. We were delighted to see a Respendent Quetzel in the local vicinity during our stay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were provided and always plentiful. Room was clean and comfortable and most of the accommodation was a short walk from the main reception. Safe in the room. There's a small garden where hummingbirds are surrounding the feeders provided.

"Stunning location and hummingbird heaven"

8.0

Located deep down in a beautiful river valley in the high Talamanca mountains in cloud forest Savegre Lodge was a friendly comfortable base for our 4 night stay. The rooms are basic but comfortable and spacious with heating/aircon unit much needed for chilly evenings and mornings, in room coffee machine provided on request. We were on half board basis with buffet style breakfast and table service for 3 course evening meals. They seem to rotate a 2 day menu with adequate, tasty choices for our stay though the pizza was very poor. The bar was great on rainy afternoons being cosy, friendly with a great indoor gas fire pit powered by byproducts of their eco recycling system. All the staff were helpful, efficient and friendly speaking good English with a special shout out for the barman/waiter Issac who arranged for us to have our evening meals in the bar rather than the large restaurant which had several big tour groups during our stay. We had a great early morning quetzal tour with Raul Chacon (the founders grandson) seeing 6 plus many many more birds and we booked him again for a private 3 hour tour further up the valley into the forest the next day which was brilliant seeing and learning so much about the cloud forest and area. Can also recommend taking a walk along the fast flowing Savegre River which runs through the hotel grounds, the delightful onsite hummingbird garden and Feathers bird garden next to the hotel which has a range of feeders attracting many different birds providing great photography and phone video opportunities. All in all our favourite location on our trip!

Room was comfortable. No view from room. Pretty area with gardens around walkways. Not a lot of outside seating areas. Most rooms are a walk uphill a ways. Not many have close parking. Trails uphill behind resort. 4x4 drive to upper parking was in good shape and looked good enough for 2 wheel when dry. Dining was fine, with good service. Trout was good, though I think it was better for lunch up the road at the next cafe. Bar area has seating and fire. Happy hour 3-5. The resort seems to do a lot of large bus groups. Dining room was full with 4 tables of 10-15 people and just a handful of couples at other tables.

"Disappointing spa experience"

8.0

The hotel is fantastic - very beautiful. Excellent service everwhere except the spa. After a gruelling couple of days, I was looking forward to a spa treatment. I booked a one hour and 20 minute spa treatment as a special treat for myself. I arrived at the spa early as recommended to enjoy the whirlpool. No one was at the front desk. A male patron was wandering around in a robe looking for spa staff and he had been looking for awhile I rang the bell a couple of times and no one came I waited approximately 15 min before someone came. By this time, I had very little time before my treatment. I filled out paperwork and waited. Somone came out ten minutes later and told me the massage therapist was running late. My treatment began about twenty minutes late. The massage therapist ended the treatment at one hour and five minutes. When I queried why I was not receiving the full time, she did not answer BUT I was charged for a 80 minute massage The whole experience tarnished what was a great visit to the hotel

"A Nature Photographer's Dream"

10.0

This place is fantastic! The road from the highway to the hotel is rough, so I recommend AWD, though a 2WD might manage in good conditions. The drive from the city eventually becomes lush and scenic, with charming houses and businesses along the way. Tip: Stop at Miriam’s Quetzals about ten minutes from the hotel for coffee. The patio offers incredible close-range birdwatching. The hotel is beautiful as expected, with a lovely and modern reception, restaurant, gardens, bar, and terrace. The staff were kind and helpful, and while our cabin was a bit dated (hard bed, faint damp smell), it was cozy and peaceful. Late December temperatures were generally cool, but the cabin had nice temperature control for both AC and heat. Water pressure in the showers was weak and the water took a while to heat up, but it was adequate. Hummingbirds, trogons, and occasional quetzals visit the grounds. Steep trails lead up into the forest for hikers. Highlight: The birdwatching/quetzal tours: -Half Day Group Tour: Guided by Melvin (an original owner, I believe), we saw quetzals right away and explored the forest and his stunning personal garden. The experience was marred by crying and grumpy children in the group; our fault for not realizing how many families with young kids come to Savegre. -Private Tour: Julien, Melvin’s son, led us to a secluded spot and gave an in-depth, fascinating discussion about the birds. I highly recommend the private tour for photographers. The food was very good, with an included breakfast buffet thoughtfully managed to accommodate all schedules. We especially loved the terrace and bar, which served excellent drinks with great service. Don’t Miss: The spa! The massage was excellent and well worth the fair price—a perfect way to unwind after exploring. This is a special place, and we hope to return someday

"Beautiful spot/great hospitality"

10.0

Beautiful grounds and hiking! We added at least 20 birds to our life list (in only 2 hours!) thanks to Raul who was a fabulous guide and even knew where bare-shanked screech owls were roosting and found them in his scope. We did not see the quetzal (saw it years ago in Monteverde) but it hardly mattered. I had taken pics of the gorgeous colorful bird photos framed on the restaurant wall during dinner (wonderful meal, great wine selection which was a surprise) and Raul helped us find them the following morning. We hiked for about six hours (did not quite reach the summit of Cerro de la Muerte) in the stunning forest of old oak trees and enjoyed the jacuzzi and sauna for a relaxing afternoon before dinner. The cabins/rooms were cozy and in the middle of gardens. The hotel is very eco conscious (no plastic bottles anywhere!) and uses composting to make methane to run infrastructure and dining room heaters. The greenhouse was stunning! It was a wonderful experience all around.
