"Excellent Place"

10.0

Great Hotel . We come twice a year and never disappoints. Hotel is clean ,Beach & Grounds are excellent. Staff are brilliant . We always come B&B as go out every evening. Use local taxis. So chilled up at Cape Point. None of the hustle & bustle of Senegambia. Big shout to all the staff . Will be back later this year as usual . See you soon.

"Beautiful hotel by the beach"

The hotel staff provided high-quality services and a delicious breakfast. I saw a big mouse. That was a point of pity about the hotel.

"BEWARE OF FOOD POISONING AT THE OCEAN BAY HOTEL IN GAMBIA"

4.0

1. We arrived at our hotel around 9.30p.m then ate at the Hotel Restaurant before retiring. I then spent the next day in our room as a result of severe diarrhoea! 2. The following day we complained to the TUI Rep (Alisa?) who said that nobody else had complained of food poisoning. This proved to be untruthful as, over the next week, we spoke to some twenty or so guests and found that around 60% had been similarly affected, many of whom had also complained to the Rep! Indeed, one guest had diarrhoea on five consecutive days and had to keep cancelling trips/tours to various parts of the country. Ironically, when he recovered, his wife contracted the same condition. 3. On our fourth day, 18th April, my wife was taken ill whilst at the local beach. We returned to our room where she experienced both diarrhoea and violent vomiting. She was so poorly she stayed in our room for two days, missing five consecutive meals. In total we missed three days of our holiday through no fault of our own. 4. After complaining to both the Rep and Hotel Management, they tried to assure me that it was a one off event and kept asking where else we had eaten. I told them we had nothing to eat or drink outside the hotel grounds. 5. Upon investigation it appeared to me that they appeared to have little understanding of food hygiene. They appeared to cook for around five hundred people when there seemed to be little more than fifty guests and that number diminished over the fortnight. Therefore food was not eaten and many dishes appeared in the same buffet containers at the next meal and subsequent meals. Clearly this food was reheated but not to the appropriate temperature to kill any bacteria. 6. Subsequently we were very wary of what food to choose and mainly ate dishes we knew to be freshly cooked such as omelette and pizza. 7. When we were feeling better, we were shocked that our 'Fully Inclusive' tariff did not allow us to have certain drinks (some cocktails and even hot chocolate) or food such as ice cream. Neither of us drink much alcohol and so we felt that fully inclusive appeared to be a misnomer that did not represent value for money. Furthermore we wondered why some food items were not available and were told they were running down and not reordering because the hotel was closing for the season two days after our departure. 8. We could not recommend this hotel to anyone. Although most of the staff were friendly and helpful, their contracts were about to expire and they would be receiving no income for the next five months therefore their enthusiasm was waning. Had we known the hotel was closing at the end of April we would not have booked this holiday. TUI should make this obvious on the website. 9. On our return I completed the Feedback form and I subsequently received an email saying TUI were sorry to hear that our holiday wasn't as we expected. No we didn't expect to get food poisoning nor expect that the management had such little disregard for/understanding of food hygiene! 10. We were offered a miserly discount of £100 on our next TUI holiday (offer expiring at the end of June) but I had already booked a trip to Samos, Greece with TUI departing in September 2026 so even if I had wanted to take up this offer, I was unable to do so as it was pre-booked. 11. I have therefore contacted TUI on a number of occasions over the past six weeks but found them completely unsympathetic. I was told their rep had not passed on any of the complaints she received from hotel guests and therefore it was basically my word against hers/the hotel management. Obviously, apart from the holiday already booked with them for 2026 (for which I have paid a deposit) I will never travel with them again.

"A very happy holiday in the Gambia and at the Ocean Bay"

10.0

We stayed at the Ocean Bay over Easter for two weeks and enjoyed one of our most interesting and different holidays. Flight - TUI were rather officious at Gatwick airport and although all our luggage was within the limits, even hand luggage was weighed and measured. Nothing was provided free on the flight and the food we bought was not great. On the return flight we paid £20 each for use of the lounge (flight was a bit delayed) and it included free food, 3 free premium drinks and a calm atmosphere. Tui rep at hotel (Alisa) was excellent though, reliably attending 6 days a week. Room - as others have said, the room was spacious, included fridge, safe big enough for a laptop, tea/coffee facilities and good air-con. It was a bit old-fashioned looking but we never ran out of hot water and any issues were rectified quickly. We stayed B&B, which I would hugely recommend, but breakfasts were very good including eggs made to order, baked beans, nice bacon, waffles to order, cheese, meat, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts and more. The staff were all brilliant, hard working and friendly - except one - the manager of the place where you collect beach/pool towels was rude and unpleasant, even having an argument with me about towels in front of other guests (who all agreed with me in the argument). He did spoil the last day. But the towels are too small anyway (He will not allow you to borrow two), so I suggest you bring your own - it is the only criticism I would make really. The gardens are attractive and well maintained and the beach is fantastic - the fruit juices and coconut brought to you at the beach by the guys who own the stalls are delicious - they don't bother you, they are very polite. It is lovely sunbathing under the palms. I had two very good and reasonably priced massages at the spa. Security is good at the hotel, although we never felt ill at ease. We would particularly recommend Calypso and the Indian restaurant for meals - not ill once. Good value and tastes good. We went on lots of trips and that is how we really got to know Gambia: We went with TUI to George Town for an overnight stay in a 'hut' (with no electricity). It included ferry trip, coach to market and traditional village visit, all food, entertainment, many hours river voyage where we saw hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and it was fun staying in the traditional hut. Would recommend and we were pleased we went with Tui as there were so many elements to the trip. We recommend that you use the orange-shirted official, licensed guides who have a hut opposite the hotel. We used CD who was recommended to us by another couple. He was personable, knowledgeable and taught us so much about life in his country as well as efficiently organising our trips. We really enjoyed walking with him to the Crocodile Park, market and fishing harbour near the hotel where we saw a bit of local life. We also went with him to Senegal (take passport and yellow fever vac certificate) to the safari park and walk with lions, which we would recommend. He was well-organised. We used another local professional expert for a bird watching morning - my husband noted 38 different birds. We used another local man, Johnny (next to the money exchange) for an all day boat trip, which was very relaxing and included good food and drink and was excellent value. We would definitely recommend The Gambia for a holiday where you feel that you have visited somewhere different and Ocean Bay as your hotel. We did not realise until we arrived that we were staying for more or less the last two weeks of the tourist season and most of the locals we met would have little or no work until November - we happily paid them tips to help - but despite much poverty they say they are happy and all give you the biggest welcome and thank you for visiting their country. We plan to visit again.

"Not 4 star"

4.0

Review TUI package holiday to Gambia Ocean Bay hotel advertised as 4 star. According to area manager Mr. T Saine 4.5 star. The flight: Small plane with no inflight entertainment for a 6 hour flight so bring your media and food. Monzo doesn't work on the plane so bring alternative forms of cash payment. Booking your seat: TUI had xs on the seats but when we boarded the plane from Manchester to Gambia it was nearly empty. Both me and my friend had a full row to ourselves. This obviously a rouse to get us to pay for seats. Staff -friendly and helpful, Musa at the reception bar and Aliue great and professional. Food- 2.5 out of 5 But OK for a week or two. Board options. We were all inclusive. 2 out 5. The staff at the hotel and obviously the management do not understand, accept or value the concept of all inclusive. They feel that you are cheating the locals and them out of money. So as an all inclusive guest you are treated as a second class wasteful guest who needs to be controlled. This control means limited drinks and food menus list see the attached photographs. We were not allowed or offered ice-cream, they ran out of pineapple and diet coke or pepsi. Inclusive guests were not allowed decafinated coffee or hot chocolate. So if you have children don't bother going to this hotel. In fact don't bother with all inclusive in Gambia. Bed and breakfast is about it. Facilities: Sun loungers dusty, grey foam pads dirty need washing as they are a healthy and safety risk mine had blood on it! Our concerns were met with excuses. So bring your own old towel to put down as well as using their thin stained towels. Speaking of towels we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. T Saine and Mr. Charm. Mr. Saine was not sane as he was unprofessional and rude. He ocossted us in the foyer and attempted to chastise us about the stains on the towels from our bedroom. He did not want to listen and then his sidekick worker came over to us with the towels in a bag. All this is done in the foyer with staff and people watching and listening. He refused to give us his name or provide us with his card which confirmed his rank and title. So 0 out of 5. As a manager he needs to learn how to speak to people in a respectful manner. So would I return to Ocean Bay? Maybe but on a bed and breakfast basis only. Keep your all inclusive money for another country. TUI you need to be truthful and not pushing all inclusive in countries who don't want or believe in it.
