Thornbury Castle - A Relais & Chateaux Hotel

I loved the overall experience of staying in a castle. The attention to detail was wonderful. I especially liked the underfloor heating in the bathroom it was unexpected and a nice touch. There were so many incredibly nice features probably too many to list here. The grounds were impeccable and a joy to walk around. It was very quiet both inside the room and outside apart from a few birds sat on the chimney! Only quality food was used throughout our breakfast which was very satisfying. To my delight I managed to capture a quick video of King Henry VIII and one of his many wives (just not sure which one is was)lol I was well impressed with the complementary gin (it's the first time I have drank gin) it added to the decadence of the overall ambience.

Unfortunately, there were a few things that I felt let down the whole experience for me. The attention to detail wasn't up to standard in certain areas. Since it stated that there was valet parking I imaged there would have been someone at the reception who would have parked our vehicle. There was no porterage available or offered so the receptionist seeing me struggling kindly offered to carry my luggage up the two flights of stairs. The scales weren't working in the closet they were showing LO therefore unusable. The room temperature was a little too high overnight. Because we were't shown how to adjust it, I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to alter it. I was woken fairly early by the occupant above drawing a bath. The bathroom its self was let down by a few things. There was no where to place my toiletry bag. So I had to place it on top of the loo!!! There was a spider crawling on the folded towel which I had to bravely dispose of. The basin was dirty in the overflow and every time I drew any water it really smelled disgusting. The actual shower at the bottom corners there is the start of mould. This needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Furthermore, at breakfast my toast arrived before the actual breakfast. My partner ordered sourdough with his which arrived on time. Annoyingly, as I wanted to eat something before the actual breakfast I ordered pain au chocolates. I was informed that they were in the process of baking a fresh batch. Therefore, I didn't manage to eat anything before my main breakfast. My croissants arrived as I was eating my way through the large breakfast, but I did manage a small amount only to be very disappointed that they weren't chocolate at all !!! Along with the fact that the staff were too busy to help dashing around etc I couldn't even order another coffee. Some of these things are minor in the grand scheme of things but it would of just made it that perfect stay.

Falconry. Walk with the Hawks was excellent!!! Also the heated floors in the bathroom were unexpected and a great bonus to an already magical stay!

The castle was a spectacular place to stay and we were made to feel very special with exceptional staff and an awesome room.

The location is exquisite. The room was spotless and luxurious. The staff were delightful. The food and drink were beautiful. I had the best French coffee I have ever tasted. It was a fabulous experience and I look forward to visiting again to try the afternoon tea. Thornbury Castle is majestic and opulent, but there is not a hint of snobbery or stuffiness - it is so welcoming and friendly.
