Thornbury Castle - A Relais & Chateaux Hotel

The friendly, welcoming staff, spacious and sumptious room, excellent facilities and beautiful gardens.Breakfast was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff.

Not being able to stay longer...will definitely be back!

First, Thornbury Castle was our splurge stay out of 9 properties, meaning the most expensive. The property is exquisite. The gardens are beautiful. The inside downstairs library, game area, dining/eating rooms done impeccably.

There wasn’t alot to take a look and change, but upon our first check-in, the woman doing it was a little cold compared to every other person we had contact with in the property. When you check someone in, you are reflecting on the property. I know not everyone is super cheery, but we were told the checkin process quickly, and a bit curtly. Another issue we had, was on our checkout day, my wife had been up all night sick with a migraine. Even though she had and did take her meds, it persisted. I went down to inquire if we could have an hour later as she had just fallen asleep. I was told a 35.00 fee (in pounds) would be incurred. I mean, it wasn’t just a case of we wanted to just hang around, and we also were told the property wasn’t filled to capacity. Plus our checkout in was late by an hour as it wasn’t done being cleaned! Mind you this cost us $465/night U.S. dollars, and we stayed 2 nights as well as ate all our meals there. It just seemed a very petty thing to say upon leaving. As far as cleaning gos, there were two 12” hairs spread out on the white subway tiles shower. My wife and I have white hair. Kind of a turnoff, which I wouldn’t even say IF the above hadn’t been so petty.

Overall a stay at Thornbury Castle is a wonderful experience.

The check-in on arrival was poor - a long wait while the solo receptionist was on a long phone call. A further wait whilst the lady in front was dealt with with with no one to show her to her room other than the receptionist on duty - a further wait. At Hartwell House near Aylesbury, where we stayed recently, we were welcomed by the porter who took the luggage from the car, showed us to reception where there were two receptionist on duty. Then we were shown to our room by the porter to find our luggage there already. A much better welcoming experience.
