Hotel Astoria

Stayed in the Hotel Astoria for 4 days at the end of May. Our room was very spacious, quiet and comfortable and had a balcony with a great view of the lake. Room was clean and had a powerful shower with constant piping hot water - so no complaints there. We were half board and certainly have no complaints about the food or the service. There was a choice of several starters, main courses and desserts each evening and everything we tried was delicious. Breakfast Buffet was a help yourself affair (teas and coffees served to your table by the waiter). Usual continental selection with addition of scrambled eggs and sausages/bacon. Everything was regularly replenished. Hotel is a good location right on the esplanade with a short walk to the ferry where you can catch a boat to visit the Borromean Islands - well worth it! Would also recommend a wee trip on the tourist train to get the layout of the town (and see some of the parts that are higher up that you may not want to climb to). If the market is on, would recommend a visit. K2 Gelateria was also fabulous.

Location of hotel excellent , friendly staff, lucky to have good room and modern bathroom with large shower.

Breakfast buffet adequate but food in general was industrial quality not quite up to 4* standard expectations. Room amenities basic minimum.

The reception staff were amazing. The bar man Gian Luca was very friendly and attentive, even finding us to watch the football match (cup final). Swimming pool was lovely and very clean. The rooms were very clean but the way from the shower went everywhere.

The pool bar was closed. The lifts were very small. The air conditioning in the rooms wasn’t powerful enough. Omelette for breakfast was €7! Not sure why as there were boiled and scrambled eggs available included in the rate. Limited hot food breakfast selection after a few days stay. Gluten free range was good.

A walk down from the railway station lead us to our hotel. We had a nice bright room on the 5th floor with outside sitting area with table & chairs. There were lovely views of Stresa lake and surrounds. Our bedroom had 2 single beds pushed together, a desk with TV (with many English speaking channels). There was a built in wardrobe and safe. The bathroom has 2 sinks, bidet, toilet and shower over spa bath. Talking to other guests they did not have a spa. On the ground floor was a very large dining room with abundant buffet breakfast options. The staff provide tea or coffee on request. The dining room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Saturday there was a wedding reception so the dining room was not available to guests. It is a short walk to the township of Stresa with abundant restaurants, chemists, clothing shops and tourist goods. It is an easy walk to catch the boat to the 3 Borromean islands located not far offshore and doable in one day. The cable car has not functioned since 2021.

The air conditioning in the main room seems to produce a very unpleasant smell on a regular basis. We reported this twice but no-one got back to us and the unpleasant smell continued until the end of our stay. On checkout we mentioned it again and the staff member said he would look into it. We would not stay in the hotel again. There are no tea or coffee facilities in the room. You can request a kettle for 10 Euros per day! There was a fridge but no milk in it.
