John Rutledge House Inn

What a wonderful place to stay. A very lovely and super clean place to stay. The history was so interesting. All staff members were so kind and friendly. Would definitely stay here again when we visit Charleston. The location is just right close to everything to make it walkable to many of the sites.

It was a wonderful property, service and food. We had an excellent time. Tea in the afternoon and evening drinks were very nice. The setting and attention to detail were excellent as well as the room information in which the rooms were named for was historical interesting. We look forward ti staying again in the future.

We’ve made many trips to Charleston over the last 20 years and tried a handful of other inns in the earliest years. But since we discovered the Rutledge House we’ve never stayed anywhere else. We love the spacious suites with comfortable sitting rooms and large bedrooms with Tempur-Pedic mattresses. The JRH staff are helpful and the concierge kindly coordinates all of our restaurant reservations beautifully. Breakfasts are diverse and well prepared, served indoors or in the private garden, and afternoon teas with hors d’oeuvres are delightful and different each day. Highly recommend the John Rutledge House!

We stayed at the inn in April 2025. Amazing inn. Very clean and lovely appointments. Wonderful staff. Great location - walk to everything. Extra touches add to the experience - bottled water, afternoon tea, full breakfast, port, brandy. Highly recommended.

Fabulous in every way! Can't say enough. Dripping with history and charm, best service ever, room was beautiful. ..the shower was to die for........incredible stay......everything was perfect. Breakfast was very good . I would highly recommend this Inn.

I visited Charleston, SC as a destination vacation to celebrate my birthday. I chose the John Rutledge House Inn as my hotel due to its fine reputation and proximity to downtown ameity. I got so much more than I expected. The service staff was friendly and attentive. The occomdations were clasic and comfortable. I was a sort walk from the battery, the market and so much dining & entertainment. I highly reccommend this location for any upscale Charleston excusion. Brian T.

Can’t say enough great things. Staff was accommodating, helpful and welcoming. Location can’t be beat. Breakfast every day was complete perfection. This is an old inn & decor is period-specific. We loved it. Bathroom was modern and had amazing water pressure which for the age of the inn was a nice surprise!

This was the most we ever paid for a hotel anywhere and I have to say it was worth it. Checked nearly all the boxes: Well located, neat authentic historical building with little artifacts, free coffee, onsite parking, super nice staff, great breakfast included (served in the room, courtyard are ballroom), afternoon (iced) tea with appetizers and desserts, evening sherry and brandy, large well appointed room. The only things lacking were a fitness center - they have an arrangement with a place, but it's not nearby and no onsite restaurant, though they offer a discount to a place about 1/2 mile away ($85/person).

Beautiful mansion in the heart of Charleston, walking distance to nearly everything but on-site parking helpful if car is needed. Attentive, helpful and well informed staff. Included breakfast is very convenient. We had a beautiful room with comfortable bed and working fireplace. Room might need more dresser space if staying more than 2-3 days.

We thoroughly enjoyed our three-night stay. This historic property is wonderfully maintained. Our room was very comfortable. The reception staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and genuinely an asset to the property. Breakfast staff is equally attentive and friendly. While all the staff is wonderful, the all star is the gentleman who handles luggage, does light maintenance and other tasks. Property is within walking distance to restaurants and most of the historic district. We did not need a vehicle when we were staying here, but they do have a parking area (added fee) for those that do. If we visit Charleston again, we will certainly stay here.
