Heritage Grange at Thurston, Hotel

Well, the grounds are lovely, and the building is attractive outside ... and there it ends. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, a bit before 3pm when the door opens (I didn't realise) and then was given a very lackluster greeting, told there was no food to be had as the restaurant was closed that night (!); when I asked where I could eat I was told the name of what I took to be a nearby pub (no explanation beyond the name) ... and because I had no car this meant walking over a mile on a road with no shoulder or paths for pedestrians. My rom overlooked a nice lawn, but the advertised spa was closed, and there was an air of eerie dereliction about the place. As far as I could tell I was the only guest there, as there were no cars at all out front, and when the building was completely silent at about 8pm and the entire place locked up, it actually felt pretty creepy (I was reading East Anglian ghost stories at the time, so maybe that was part of it ... but not all of it!). Slept poorly because I felt exposed and unprotected in this great empty building, came down in the morning to find no breakfast available, place still totally shut up and in darkness. I just wanted out. The manager works remotely as far as I can tell because no-one was around, I had to phone him to find out how to check out, he told me just leave the key at the desk, and only grudgingly ordered me a cab hen I began to sound annoyed at how weird the whole experience had been. I found myself wondering what this place is *for* - a backdrop for a wedding reception? Certainly not for people looking for a hospitable stay! And there ends my tale - find somewhere else to stay.

The staff were very good and friendly and so was the food.

My room as a solo had low beams in certain places and small room. Slightly overpriced for what I got

Shower was very poor. Building all a bit tatty - for example, the windows in our room were very dirty. I did not feel encouraged to try their food.

Shabby and in need of refurbishment. Not very good breakfast - cooked items in warming trays were not very hot. A few packs of cereal, no fruits or yoghurt and no facility to order from kitchen.

It was hot, so I had the window open. An outside boiler was occasionally noisy. With the double glazed window shut, this wouldn't have been a problem.
