"Good for a couple nights for the price, avoid the night tour!"

6.0

I have to warn others to avoid the night tour if you care at all about wildlife, though I hope our negative experience is not the norm. Our guide (whose name I unfortunately forget) approached and tried to touch toads as well as fledgling nightjar birds in order to get them to move or be more interesting to us. The birds were obviously stressed and poorly flew away to avoid us. Then he saw a nesting female nightjar, walked up to it, PUSHED it off of her nest in order to show us her very young, not yet flight capable nestlings! The bird was obviously extremely stressed by this, showing defensive behaviour. Our guide only stopped when I expressed discomfort with this and suggested that we leave her alone. I was honestly in shock, as a wildlife biologist who works with birds this is not only extremely unethical, but also as we found out, illegal in Costa Rica (touching or disturbing any wildlife). I felt so much guilt that he was harming wildlife purely for our enjoyment, and that really left a sour taste in my mouth about the whole resort. Luckily, our guide Manuel the next day did a great job on the bird watching tour and was very respectful of the wildlife, knowledgeable, and great at pointing birds out for us. I do wish he had binoculars available, as I was the only one in the group with them and shared them with others in order to see a few birds they couldn’t have otherwise. The tour probably is best for a casual enjoyer of birds. Be wary that certain activities are NOT worth the price (ex $50 per person for a hanging bridges tour). We simply went there ourselves and enjoyed it (we saw so many birds as well as an anteater!). Same with a guide to hike to the waterfalls - maps of the trails can be found online and if you have any hiking experience, I don’t think paying for a self guided tour is at all necessary (though they imply that you need to, the trails are marked and easily accessible from the resort). The room was clean, private, and had everything we needed. No AC but it wasn’t needed even at 29 degree days - it cooled down quickly at night and the very strong fan helped. The location was great - so many birds and wildlife to observe right outside our window! The pools were great to cool off at while we waited for check in as we arrived from an early flight. Reception was able to get us early check in and upgraded our room! If only going for a couple of days, we found it fine to just uber to and from, as we didn’t rent a vehicle. The roads were a bit bumpy but absolutely no problem in the dry season. If you have any experience at all with off-roading you may wonder what other reviewers were complaining about. The included hotsprings were lovely, transport via tractor is included and just needs to be reserved. Food was very, very expensive by Canadian standards, though decent quality and portion wise. Service at the Jaguar restaurant was great, at the Mirador sunset bar, absolutely awful. We waited nearly an hour and only received menus, no water or order taken so decided to leave and were served immediately at Jaguar instead. Overall, it’s a good base if you are renting a car and want to explore the nearby national park, or just want to stay for a couple of days to enjoy the on site activities.

"Espectacular."

10.0

"Very Good"

7.0

Nice „all-in-one“ place but the official photos look way nicer than the place looks like in reality. Especially for children interesting because you can do a lot of actovities if you have the pocket money at hand (not cheap). We spotted different animals like birds, tukans, coati, monkeys, deer every dqy and there are lots of iguanas around the cabins. The restaurant El Mirador has stunning sunset views and is definitely one of the highlights (good piña colada USD 8). We didn’t like the relatively high prices, some construction noises before 7h in the morning behind our cabin and the ugly smell in out bathroom. The cabin‘s walls are very thin so you can hear your neighbors quite clearly. The service for guests is generally good but facilities like the cabins and the pool could be maintained a little bit better. And some hooks to hang one‘s stuff in the bathroom would be nice. Breakfast buffet was included in the price, has an acceptable variety and taste is ok. The road to the hotel is not entirely paved with some gravel and inclination but manageable with a normal car (Toyota Yaris). We recommend to stay no more than 3 nights. Most people seem to come with a day pass or for a night at the most…and there are mainly travel groups.

"Un lugar para disfrutar con cuidado"

9.0
