Holiday Inn Express Zhengzhou Zhongzhou by IHG

I have to admit, I am a budget traveler and often stay in hostels and guesthouses. I booked the Holiday Inn Express because I had a coupon! That aside, I do think this is a good hotel even for those who are used to traveling on a higher budget than mine. The room was very clean and comfortable. It included a choice in pillows (hard or soft) and there was a small loveseat in the room. There was a decent selection of English channels on TV. The buffet breakfast was pretty good as there was a mix of Chinese and western food on offer. The staff was fairly friendly, but I'm not sure on their English speaking ability (I can speak Chinese). The location is also good--near the city center. Taxis are very cheap (as long as you can catch one--be sure to have an address in Chinese) you'll be able to get anywhere fairly quickly without paying much.

From the description I was not expecting the hotel to be so dated and 'well worn'. The furniture, decor and finishes looked about 20 years old, very well used and damaged. The carpet was ridged and threadbare. Grateful we were only there for 2 nights. The hotel is being refurbished - I would wait until it is finished before going there. We struggled with night staff and language. The internet worked well though

The hotel staff made every effort to be communicative and helpful. Four staff were also kind enough to work together to make arrangements for me to do my sightseeing using a local taxi and made my trip a dream!

From the moment we walked in to our departure, the staff was extremely attentive and responsive. They also helped us arrange for a taxi hire to take us to the Shaolin Temple, which was the reason for our visit to Zhengzhou. The breakfast buffet was very Chinese (don't expect an omelette, but if you like dim sum for breakfast, you'll be happy)
