Hotel Del Portal San Miguel de Allende

The first unexpected thing about this hotel was that the van I had taken from the airport could not deliver me to the door: I was dropped off a block and a half away. Once I found the entrance, which was hard to spot among all the businesses in that block, I had to lug my suitcase up a steep flight of stairs. The room I was given was right next to the lobby -- it literally had windows through which I could see the front desk, and I had to keep the curtains drawn for privacy. There was no mini-fridge or microwave in the room, no desk, and no chair either. All this might sound rather off-putting, and for someone with mobility issues it might be difficult, but for me it worked out well. The hotel is located on the main square, which is closed to traffic along with the surrounding streets for one block in every direction. This means that, whenever you go out, you exit onto a shady patio filled with pedestrians rather than a narrow sidewalk on a busy street. By the third day I was able to zip up the stairs without stopping halfway up, as I had to at first. And the room was very quiet; I had no trouble sleeping. The hotel has a terrace on the roof, and there is a bar next door with free wifi, so I had no problem finding places to use my laptop. I would add that the bed was comfortable, the aircon worked well, and the bathroom was odd but functional. The location is as central as can be, close to everything of interest to tourists. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, and about half of them are fluent in English. If you can deal with the stairs then the Hotel de Portal is an excellent economical option in San Miguel de Allende.

I love the location. Walkable to many shops and restaurants. The room was ok. There were not any plug ins for our phones. Only 2 in the bathroom. Wood be nice to have some near the bed.

The room was a perfect location for a one night visit to San Miguel. I wanted to be in the central part of town with access to good restaurants and the main square. I was also able to walk to the wonderful textile centre to see all the artists there. The city is beautifully clean.

The church bells rang all night.

Very small hotel with outstanding location right on main square. However, no cars are allowed on square, so you have to walk 2 blocks with your luggage and up a flight of stairs to get to hotel; they have no porters to help with luggage. My room overlooked second floor terrace of hotel and had amazing views of the main church; however the drapes in my room were transparent allowing for absolutely no privacy as anyone could look directly into room from the terrace. Also, light was poor in the room and the safe did not work, The front staff, however, were very nice and helpful, especially Pedro. The staff quickly arranged for new safe and also got an additional lamp to help with light. All facilities were very clean. Coffee is prepared every morning, but there is no food service.

Room 206 - 2 comfortable beds , new bathroom, roomy. Disco across the street, but, the music was muted and pleasant to listen to. Church bells hourly. Note: no elevator. 20 steps up to reception. Staff pleasant and welcoming. Would gladly stay here again.

Location was excellent.

No windows in the room. Only two fake ones looking at the Reception. Bathroom was horrible. Hairs in the sink. There was no plug in the room to charge devices. Only one near the sink but no place where to put the iPad while charging. Shower very basic with extra short curtains, water went to the floor. Long steep stairs to go to reception. No help with luggage. Steep stairs should be mentioned on the site if someone has difficulties. Very disappointing in general.

I loved the place and location. It was right in the center of everything. The only thing I didn’t like was the stairs but that was unavoidable. Some sort of banister would be helpful especially when having to carry luggage. The staff was wonderful and very friendly.
