"We made the right choice"

10.0

My fiance and I spent three nights here last week after spending a few days with my son and his girlfriend in at the Grand Hotel San Pietro in Taormina. The two experiences couldn't be more different. The Grand is a luxury 5-star (and very expensive) hotel high up above the ocean, while Bucca di Bacco is a much more laid-back 4-star hotel right on the beach. But, despite the obvious differences, we enjoyed both equally. I'm one of those people who scans reviews for days (or even weeks) before deciding where to go and stay. At the Grand, we stayed in their 2-bedroom penthouse suite because we were two couples from the same family and wanted to have as close to our "White Lotus" moment as possible. The cost was outrageous, but I would do it all over again. I really struggled with the hotel choice in Positano, however. I worried that going from a big €4,000+ per night suite in Sicily to a more standard €800 per night room in Positano would feel like we were compromising. And I had read that La Serena was "the place" to go if you could afford it. Boy was I wrong!!!! The Bucca di Bacco is now our go-to hotel on the Amalfi coast. The room was great. The views were stunning. The breakfast was even better than the Grand's. The restaurant was one of the best I've ever eaten at. And there are a dozen or so equal venues (e.g. Chez Black) right across the way. Best of all, no stairs, amazing beach club, and lots of great shopping within steps of the hotel's entrance. Speaking of that, one tip is to definitely take advantage of the porter service and pay special attention to the signs going down from the parking lot. We found the restaurant no problem, but the hotel entrance was really hidden away since we weren't familiar at all with the village. Just ask the people at the restaurant where to go. Or, if you're too shy to ask, retrace about 15 steps from the restaurant and you will see the hotel front desk through the glass to your right. All anxiety and FOMO aside, Hotel Buca di Bacco is the perfect place to stay in Positano.

Great room overlooking the beach. Good food. Service seemed a little burned out and ready for a seasonal break.
