The George of Colchester

Lovely decor and furnishings. Room large and comfortable. Very helpful staff.

Our stay was ruined by a Parking Fine Demand. On arrival we asked to pay for parking immediately but were told in no uncertain terms that we were to pay on departure, which we duly did. We have phoned and emailed on several occasions to resolve this situation, however nobody has got back to us. I frequently visit Colchester, however I shall not use the George as one needs to factor in the £60 fine. AVOID.

A really lovely atmosphere, great mix of old building style and modern decor. A lively but friendly atmosphere. Fantastic restaurant with great service which catered for both gluten free and vegan diet with lots of choice. The only negative is because it is in the center of town it was noisy outside until the early hours, but this is obviously not anything the hotel can control, just something to consider when booking.

Everything was like new, which given the recent refurbishment isn't surprising. Based on this visit I wouldn't really change anything

Super couple of days. Well presented hotel in prime location. Recently refurbished, it couldn’t be faulted. Breakfast was freshly cooked and enjoyable. Good service by friendly staff.

Fantastic hotel! Beautifully decorated in a modern style, but still retaining the charm of the original building. Room was nice with a comfy bed however the hotel had run out of hand soap - good thing we had antibac gel! We enjoyed pre dinner drinks in the secret courtyard and post dinner drinks in the bar. Breakfast was tasty but would have liked a better selection. Nonetheless would definitely return if I’m in the area!

The hotel looked lovely, you could tell it had been decorated. The stairs and landing areas were all very clean. The room however really marred our stay. As soon as we opened the door it had a warm musty smell, which got worse when entering the bathroom, which was lovely and clean as were the freshly laundered towels. We only used the room as a base for one night, so didn’t mention it until we checked out. However I wish I had said something the night before as the room had a strong sulphur smell in the morning and me as we must have been near the kitchens were also disturbed by several loud crashes and voices in the early hours. We didn’t stay long enough for breakfast as the smell was just so off putting. It is a shame as the owners have obviously gone to a lot of effort

Such a shame that significant investment in the property hasn't extended to training the team. There has been a major upgrade programme at the hotel and it is evident throughout the bar, public areas and bedrooms but the team don't deliver. Arrival at 10pm - major issue trying to find the hotel due to the one-way system not being recognised by 3 different sat-navs and a lack of sufficient parking behind the hotel - to a most unfriendly welcome, through to departure the next morning via a bar experience the staff are not to the standard of the refurbishment. Reception - complete lack of understanding of the customer... Where else can I park? Gives you a street name, as though I'm a local and I'm going to have a clue where that street is! Then when asked googles a postcode... Bar - closes, even to residents before 10.30pm?! Surely a night porter is more than capable of serving a drink after 10.30pm? The bar staff made no attempt to highlight the early closing when placing first drink order at 10.15pm and were completely uninterested when trying to buy a second drink at 10.30. I understand all the pandemic, labour shortage issues but there is a way of communicating that is far more engaging and guest friendly. And finally, departure. Efficient and functional but could have saved the day slightly by being engaging and interested in the customer. So many hotels do this incredibly well now... have you got a busy day ahead, a long drive etc? Summary, nice building disappointing team

Great location, great bar and reception room, staff great although bar shuts early for residents
