Quiet restful stay in bijou hotel excellent staff but need a car to explore the area nice pool

Stayed at the Porto Bay Serra Hotel for 4 nights. Great location, high up in the mountains, very quiet and peaceful, 10 minutes away from the airport right next to a beautiful golf course. The hotel is very small and cozy exactly what I was looking for. The rooms are dated but ok. Great value for your money (I paid $ 60/night) breakfast was included and was very nice too. Staff was very friendly but limited. It is for sure a great hotel for golfers or if you like to be outside the city (12 km away from Funchal) The hotel does NOT have any AC. There is nobody to help you with your lugguage.

The hotel itself is in excellent condition with modern facilities. Even the basic room is very comfortable & comes with a small personal garden patio space. Beds are super comfy with sturdy pillows. Good breakfast spread & staff always on hand. Very quiet location- perfect if you are looking for some rest & relaxation or if you plan to golf at the spectacular course down the road. The village centre is a 5 minute walk away - there is not much to see & do there but the restaurant there does a good bbq (espetada). The start of the Portela to Ribeiro Frio levada walk is 4 kms away - easy, flat walk but also incredibly boring if going solo. Beware that taxis are very expensive so if you do not have a car arrange a private transfer in advance. If taking the bus to Funchal, arrive at least 20 mins in advance at the bus stop as it can leave earlier than scheduled time.

The hotel is a delight and of course part of the Porto Bay portfolio. It is as one would expect for a hotel of this standard and I have no complaints at all. The village of Santa Serra is small and is about a ten minute walk from the hotel. There are a couple of simple restaurants in the village. There is a also a large street market on Sunday. I did not have a car, however the use of buses are enjoyable, cheap, and efficient.

Leading a busy life where we rarely have time for ourselves it was wonderful to stay in this beautiful hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made our stay so pleasant. Have already recommended this hotel to our friends. The food was of an excellent standard and we even brought our friends for a meal after we had checked out and had gone to stay at our apartment in Funchal. We were able to completely relax here. Thank you so much to all the staff.

Good location within walking distance of the centre of Santo da Serra. Excellent breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff.

It's a very nice hotel in a small village. It is located on a small hill, very calm and surrounded by lots of nature. The hotel stuff was friendly and the room nice and rather big. They have an indoor pool and a sauna which we did not use. There's a golf area close by and you reach the next bigger city called Machico in appr. 15min by car.

Lovely quiet hotel close to town. Good food and very good service by a Polish lady who speaks good English and is very polite and friendly. Three slight criticisms: first, altho there is kettle and tea/coffee in room, there was no milk so we had to "borrow" a small jug from the breakfast buffet. Second there is no mini-fridge in room. Third, it would have been nice to have had a swimming pool to dip in after a hard day walking in the mountains/on the golf course.
