So yes hotel is on lower standard since it is dated, but rooms were VERY clean, sheets as well, bathroom spanky clean. Room without breakfast is under $50 which how much cost a hostel in Kyoto. So YES I would recommend this hotel for a budget traveler. Make sure to ask for no smoking room though they do not have it they will make sure you room does not smell with cigarettes . Service was good as well, polite and timely.

We loved stayed two nights in this beautiful hotel. The front-desk personnel was so friendly with us. They give us some information about make our purchase in Kyoto. Our room was so Big and quiet. They have a great breakfast

I’m actually first time staying inside this hotel.... the design is traditional Japanese style inside room which is very attractive but when I started coughing I noticed that their heater(it’s still cold, heater is needed) is full of dust... I don’t know if I still wanna stay here next time when I visit Kyoto....

I stayed at Hotel Sugicho for one night as the hostel I was booked in could not accommodate me for the final night I was in Kyoto and it was very conveniently located just off the same street. I found it very pleasant, clean, and the staff were very kind and respectful. The room is more than adequate by Japanese standards. It's an older hotel, probably built in the 1960s, so don't expect a modern structure. But it has a kitchy-ness to it which I found very appealing.

Hotel Sugicho is located north of Teramachi-dori, a relatively quiet part of Kyoto but still near the main sights of central Kyoto. The hotel is a walk away from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station which is not particularly useful. The more useful station would be Karasuma Oike or even Karasuma station, both of which are a walk away from the hotel where you could travel to Kyoto Station or Umeda in Osaka. While the subway trains are of limited use for exploring Kyoto, the bus network is just a walk away where you could travel to most parts of the city with a handy one-day city bus pass. The hotel is a modern ryokan style lodging with traditional Japanese rooms which is very spacious. It is a little old thus expect some wear and tear which also gives the hotel a kind of old 1990s atmosphere. They also serve a modest breakfast which consist of scrambled eggs, sausages, bread and rice. The hotel is located opposite a school which is interesting to observe and catch a glimpse of the daily life in Kyoto.

"Going to Japan without staying at a Ryokan is something you don't want to miss". I took my sister's advice and It was really a nice and memorable experience for us. We planned to visit Japan at the beginning of April so we could see the Sakura Cherry Blossoms. All hotels and ryokans in Tokyo & Kyoto were full even thou we booked six months ahead. Sugicho is an older building, but very clean with excellent and friendly staffs. We chose the room with Futons and breakfasts. Their breakfasts were delicious, unique, and beautifully presented. The hotel locates near Nijo-jo castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and walking distance to Sakaimachioike Bus Stop & Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Subway Station

It is a very good Ryokan in central Kyoto. Nearby subway and bus stations and Pub area (Pontcho) is in Walking distance. The room is quite spacious and clean with tatami-mat and small private bathroom. Great Service!

This hotel is centrally located to the town center so it's really convenient to get around. The staffs here are also great and very friendly. The breakfast was traditional Japanese meal and was really good! The downside is that the room bathroom is slightly older and has a weird smell. If it wasn't anything we couldn't live with. Overall a great experience.

The place is a traditional hotel with Tatami !!! I really enjoyed the stay there. The room is quite spacious and the service is great. Also, location wise, it is quite convenient for public transportation.
