"Mats on the floor in a youth hostel - not the traditional"

2.0

We thought this room would be a tatami-mat traditional experience. It as actually just a small box of a room with stained blankets to lay on, on the floor. The entire building was dank and old, and gave us the creepy crawlies. If I had paid $50 USD to stay there, I wouldn't have been surprised. But I was shocked that they could charge $150 for a floor and dirty blankets. No bed. No bath towels. Yuck!

"Ralph"

8.0

Comfortable, clean and affordable in a good location. On a quiet street near two subway stops. The staff was friendly and spoke enough English to provide some help and direction. There were some steps to navigate to our room but not an issue for us.

"A pleasant surprise"

8.0

I did not have much expectation on this hotel but was pleasantly surprise soon as we arrived. The staff was nice and friendly, the room was very spacious (10 tatami mats) and our 17 month old baby was very happy running around the room without us worrying about her falling off beds or bumping into something. A good room style if travelling with a toddler. Breakfast was provided as it was sufficient. Limited selection but good enough. Location is very good, close to a main road with a subway station, a bakery, a 7 eleven and a nice restaurant that is not too expensive but serves good food (can't remember the name though). Only 10-15mins walk to Pontocho (or ponchoto) alley which offers good range of dining and very vibrant at night. Not too far from Nishiki Market although I thought the so called street foods there are overpriced. All in all, a very nice stay and will definitely recommend.

"I had a great stay in this Japanese style hotel"

10.0

I stayed here for 2 nights in April 2016. I booked a Japanese style room (triple). The room was pretty big, came with traditional Japanese tatami mats, an own bathroom, a refrigerator and a flat-screen TV. Free toiletries, towels and a Yukata were provided. There's room service available - beverages only (including soft drinks, beer, sake, ...). Free breakfast is available (07:15 - 09:15). A vending machine for soft drinks is in the basement of the hotel, near the reception. WIFI is free and fast. Guests have to prepare their own bed manually on a daily basis (which isn't too difficult). Rooms are cleaned every day. The next subway station is only a couple of minutes away. There are many restaurants and convenient stores nearby. Opposite to the hotel is a school and kindergarten, so it can get quite noisy early in the morning and generally until evening. If you're noise-sensitive, make sure to take some ear plugs with you. This is not a budget hotel but prices are still cheap for Japanese hotels and the price-performance ratio is top. I would definitely stay at Hotel Sugicho again.

"Confortable Japanese Hotel with Great Location"

10.0

We stayed 5 nights at this hotel during cherry blossom season with very reasonable price. The hotel is quite old but very clean and the staffs are very friendly. The room size is much bigger than the western businesss hotel. I like the shower at the basement especially after a long walk in Kyoto. I also like the location, it is very convenient to the dining street and subway. I will definitely stay here again.

"Spot On"

10.0

For the money this place is excellent. Great location in a nice area, close to good shops, supermarkets, restaurants and subway. Traditional style rooms, quiet, great shower. Large Kimono style dressing gowns changed daily. Free breakfast (but did not try this as out early every morning) Staff friendly. Would definately stay here again. Recommended.

"Pot luck who's next door"

8.0

We checked in for a Japanese experience. I'm going to be frank here, this place is like a hostel. Our neighbours were Japanese and had no respect for our peace with their kid banging on the paper thin walls. There was a certain Japanese group who looked like assassins when I went to complain about the noise.....but they were very nice and wanted to know more about England, albeit they were all piddled! I'm giving this 4/5 because of the management changing my room....even so it was like pulling teeth getting a change late at night. The breakfast is plentiful, sausage, bread, curry (not spicy) and rice. Scrambled egg. Give it a go just hope you get considerate neighbours! Taxi from station to here ¥1500

"Great budget Ryokan in central location"

6.0

We stayed here for one night before travelling to Osaka. The room was a traditional Ryokan accommodation - futon mattresses on the floor. We had a private ensuite room. Hotel was clean, reception staff were friendly and spoke some English. Breakfast was included in the rate - it is a limited buffet selection in the basement - curry sauce, rice, scrambled egg and meat. Bread and yoghurt also available. Room was comfortable and location was very convenient. Would recommend especially for groups of friends travelling on a budget.

"Very comfortable Japanese style hotel."

10.0

This is what I wanted to experience from my trip to Japan. To stay in this Japanese style hotel room is what I've wanted all my life! The hotel staff was attentively helpful beyond belief. To make a long story short we rented bikes, another valuable amenity from Sugicho, and my friend was carrying his passport (this was his first international trip/ rookie) and he ended up dropping it in the street somewhere along the way. We didn't realize until two hours later and about 10 miles into our bike ride. We immediately went back to the hotel to see if maybe he had left it on the counter. The hotel staff took remarkable initiative to help us find his passport. They recommended step by step what we should do, police report and trace our steps, while they reach out periodically to the police station to see if anyone had found it. with in a 24 hour period, the hotel staff helped us with the language barrier and helped us recover the lost passport that a noble person in Kyoto found! The hotel staff, along with the location, the price, the free breakfast, the bike rentals were all on point. But the beautiful and friendly people that work at this awesome Hotel really stand out and that's why you should stay here!
