Gable End Hotel

On arrival, there was no traditional reception desk. The owner was sitting on a sofa just inside the entrance, but you can’t simply walk in – you need to be “fobbed” through the front door. He was friendly enough and showed us to our room. The room itself made a good first impression with a wonderful sea view. However, there were several concerns. The door should have been a fire door, but the safety hinge was pulled out of the wall and no longer attached. It also had to be locked with a key rather than a turn latch, which felt unsafe in case of an emergency – you’d need to find the key before being able to exit. Looking closer, the room needed better upkeep. The windowsill was rotten, the curtains stained, and the shower room was poorly cleaned. The shower trap was dirty, and the walls showed signs of mould and orange mildew. The toilet could have been cleaner, with the rim needing a good bleach. There were long white hairs on the black tiled floor. We didn’t feel comfortable using the in-room facilities – the cups had stains and were still wet (possibly just rinsed), and the kettle had visible limescale. The bedding had yellow stains, including one of the pillows, and behind the bed was thick with dust. The bedroom furniture itself was dated and could do with replacing. We asked about the on-site bar and were told to ring a bell near the staircase, which was awkwardly blocked by a pile of cushions. After ringing, a staff member named Jack kindly opened the bar for us. Unfortunately, the only draught lager available was a very cloudy IPA with bits floating in it (£5), and a can of Diet Coke was £2. It felt uncomfortable as the staff member waited outside for us to finish and locked up immediately after. On the positive side, the pre-ordered breakfast was tasty and well cooked. Overall, the location and sea view were lovely, and the breakfast was good, but the lack of cleanliness, dated furniture, and some safety concerns made the stay less enjoyable than expected.

Friendly welcome on arrival, clean and bed was comfortable to sleep in. Breakfast was lovely and id definitely stay again.

The location was good

The bathroom was tired and dirty, the breakfast was disappointed,

Bar was never open toilet leaked and wouldn’t fix it as said to busy beds never changed or rooms cleaned till asked them after a week being there partner had to buy handle for cupboard as didn’t have one

Whilst it is a little dated in some ways it was a friendly stay, ideal to get to Horse Racing & we did have a nice breakfast. It all depends on your expectations but in these times with costs becoming ridiculous the Gable End was value for money & comfortable if a bit basic on the decor. Basic but not dirty though

Justin welcomed us beautifully. The couple who run it were not at all friendly. Especially the man. I found him rude and sullen. Kept going out for a smoke. Stunk when came in. Toilet stained under the rim. I asked for the coffee to be replaced, I was told someone would go in to clean. the coffee was replaced. cups not washed. nothing else done. the bins were emptied one day but not in the bathroom the next day. the breakfast very sparce. it would have been nice to have some fruit or yogurt. I did ask for almond milk and it was bought for us. the breakfast one morning was dried up and not at all good. The toast thin and hard. The bar was supposed to be open each evening. One night it was, I asked for a beer and was told there wasnt any. Asked for an apple cider. he did not smile just gave it to me. Another night i pressed the bell and when he came out I asked nicely if he could open open the bar and could I have an apple cider. No smile, no warmth. Just gave it to me, took the money - it was not very nice. The day we were leaving the lady saw us come down, she said are you leaving, have a good drive and walked away into another room without a smile - nothing. I was very disappointed with our stay. I feel this should be a bed and breakfast not a hotel

The room was clean. The building was well situated for the town The owner was very friendly and welcomed us when we arrived

The attitude of the staff. The man was sullen, not very helpful and not friendly. The toilet was stained under the rim. I asked for the room to be cleaned . the milk and coffee was replaced. the cups were not washed. the bins were emptied one day. the next - a bin in the bathroom was not emptied. The hall carpet is very worn. The breakfast was sparce. one day the food was congealed and not at all edible. the bar was supposed tobe open each evening for a certain time. it was once. I asked for a beer - to be told they didnt have any. I asked for an apple cider. No smile. another time I asked for the bar to be open to buy an apple cider - reluctantly he opened. Gave it to me, took the money. No smile - nothing. On the day of leaving, we came down and the woman said oh you are leaving, have a good journey and walked off. I find that so rude. it certainly is not a hotel - a bed and breakfast. I will not be going there again.
