Artful Lodger

The place is an old, charming, 3-story building (no elevator), where the top floor was a conservatory for breakfast. It's located across the street from the beautiful Elms mansion and about a 10-minute walk to downtown. We stayed in the standard room with a king bed, which was pretty comfy. The shower and AC felt great after walking around town for hours. Overall, the place was nothing fancy but great for a 3 day stay.

The location was great! The Inn Keeper, Heidi, was lovely, although I only saw her once and never again saw staff connected with the property. My room was very pretty and clean.

Overall this is great value, there are few issues with property. First staff is not on site much after the rooms are cleaned. There are only seven rooms and the front and back doors are not locked until the evening hours, although I did not verify this and the door was unlocked when I left at 6:30AM one morning. Anyone could enter the property during the day and one would not know if this person was a guest or not. I was a female traveling solo and this all felt very creepy to me. Second, the Inn is very cute, but there are a set of back stairs to a lovely breakfast room that are very treacherous. I am very agile and almost tripped several times on these stairs, so be careful! Third, my room was on the first floor so this was not an issue, but the rooms on the 2rd & 3rd rooms may have issues with escaping during a fire, especially "Estelle's room" on those treacherous stairs. Fourth, the room was very clean but there was a small rug that looked very nasty on my floor. I rolled this up and put it away. Also there is a lovely down comforter but there was not a cover on it. Unless this is washed every time after every guest, this is not very sanitary. I have picked up bed bugs and scabies from traveling so I am super careful with linen. I did not use it at all, and instead used something I brought with me. Lastly, breakfast doesn't start until 8:30AM, which is incredulous as many people may wish to be out and on the cliff walk in the early morning then visit the mansions. I missed breakfasts but was not too upset, since only a hot breakfast was offered and it wasn't stuff I would eat anyway. The Inn Keeper does provide a little coffee machine for early risers but it might be nice to set out some cold items the night before for early risers.
