"Extremely awkward stay"

4.0

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING!! Mixed review, but main WARNING: owner will secretly add and take unadvertised $30 fee to published booking price when taking payment for 'cleaning'! (Already charging $272 a night!!) Refused to refund. A beautiful property: historical, comfy bed, communal room with complimentary tea/coffee/fridge/snacks. High end decor (but messy). Well cooked, foodie breakfast. Lovely dog. BUT, all let down by the following: Hotels.com procedure re payment ignored: 50% to be paid 3 months in advance, and 50% at property. Both of these were ignored & full payment taken (from a card we didn’t actually wish to pay with) in advance, the day of check in, before we'd even arrived. (It was a nasty shock to discover that the first installment of $272 hadn't been taken 3 months earlier) Non advertised $30 cleaning fee added. CLEANING FEE??? For a $272 per night B&B? Jog on…. Informed that we were both vegetarian by message ages before arrival (a response to 'any dietary requirements?'). 1st breakfast plates both had meat sausages on and an omelette with bacon… lacklustre ‘apology’ when this was politely pointed out. We had contacted hotels.com re this ‘cleaning fee’ (ie what we saw as being overcharged even before we had arrived!) prior to our arrival. They apparently called the property. The owner, when we met him at breakfast, was pretty frosty. We can only assume he had a problem with us contacting hotels.com. No welcome, no introduction, no showing us what was what at (/tour of) the property. We had arrived late at night, which we had advised them about as a courtesy - self-check in was agreed, (surely our prerogative anyway?) yet he complained that he’d “had to wait up” for us… in reality this was because his front door locking system hadn’t been explained to us adequately/was a 'new system'. He explained it in the morning - we wondered why he hadn’t told us this the night before. Self-check in instructions were fine but no mention of the (decent) kitchen room which contained tea/coffee making facilities and drinkable water. So we assumed on arrival we were not provided with such things - disappointing for the first eve/morning. Blackout in the room is practically non existent… had we not (at after midnight) figured out that we could access the balcony (via a window, weirdly enough), we wouldn’t have spotted that there were shutters outside which we could close. It certainly wasn’t explained. Notwithstanding that, it was brighter than the sun in the room by 6am as one of the windows appeared to have nothing but a net curtain. No way to lock room when we went out for the day. Drawers in room full of rubbish/trash. Water not refilled (2 night stay). Bed not made Balcony like a war zone: hammock collapsed, balcony not cleaned. Mould in bathroom Nobody around when we checked out - but they watched us leave whilst smoking on their balcony T&C state any extra charges assessed on check out but charged us before check in Asked a week in advance re possibility of receiving (eBay) parcels at the property - at least 4 messages/attempted calls. No response until 2 days b4 (ie too late): “we don’t have any parcels for you” 🙄

Great hospitality from the owners of a very tastefully decorated and furnished period property. Located in an extremely quiet area but central for all Galveston has to offer.

Renee, Robert, and Dexter have been such great hosts. Renee’s cooking is out of this world, Robert’s green thumb really accentuates the beautiful scenery in the backyard, and of course Dexter is the sweetest little guy you will ever meet! We enjoyed our two nights stay! I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a historical journey, it feels like we were in a part of Europe with the beautiful view of the pool and backyard space. We can’t wait to return for our next trip to Galveston.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Coppersmith Inn Bed and Breakfast. The owners, Renee Vige and Robert Clarke were simply awesome. The vintage late 1880s look made our stay a memorable one. The two nights we stayed were blissful. The breakfast was definitely in a 5 star category. We highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

"Dusty old place with poor hosts"

2.0

After a long drive south we were met by Renee, who proceeded to walk us around the history of the house, take us outside to show us other rooms and talk about herself and cheffing for what felt like 10 minutes, before eventually taking us to our room. Then more talk. Anyone with guests on their mind would have started with an offer of a cold drink or use of the rest room knowing the heat and humidity of Texas. The room was smaller than expected and just full of dusty junk. It was as if to preserve the past the room had stood still. No functional space for anything. The bathroom with a small freestanding bath and homemade shower rail and curtain combo was a nightmare to use.(anyone over 5ft 5 will struggle with the shower height.). Because of the shutters, the room is dark and claustrophobic. The bed was ok, pillows hard and bedding poor quality. The AC made the right noise, but was ineffective. All the lace and windows were dirty and the bedroom mirror smeared and dirty. Breakfast was a bit of a farce. 9am is the only time slot. No menu or choices. The tacos were poor and being given sweet cake covered in syrup and icing sugar, didn’t feel like gourmet chef offerings. We were due to stay 2 nights but left after breakfast as we couldn’t bear it. My husband practically had to follow the husband through rooms to get him to talk and share that we were leaving. Sorry it’s such a long review. It really wasn’t for us and I think some people are wowed by the old-world stuff.. a guest house still needs facilities that are clean, functioning and have guest comfort in mind. This place doesn’t.
