Guangzhou Phoenix City Hotel

Everything about the hotel itself was fine, however the concierge staff are terrible in their lack of knowledge. They didn't know there was a China Mobile store right in their own little community and, they sent me all the way to a ferry station in Shenzhen that doesn't even have ferries to Hong Kong/Kowloon, rather only to the airport or Macau. I was temporarily stranded because of them. Also the service staff need a lot of improvement with English it is often difficult to get something done or have them understand what you want/need.

The positive: The common areas are beautiful. The pool is amazing. The negatives: We were in China adopting our son and unexpectedly needed important paperwork faxed after the business center had closed at the hotel. The staff at the front desk would not open the business center nor allow the documents needed for the adoption to be sent to the front desk. They simply did not care that these documents were vital. No hot water in our room. Room is large but furnishings are older. Carpet was dirty. Food is outrageously expensive. Unless you like extremely authentic Chineses food, you will find it difficult to eat. We opted for peanuts and pretzels instead. We moved hotels mostly so we could eat. US citizen.

This hotel is lovely but it is not international 5 star standards. The buffet breakfast is one of the best I've had in China. There seemed to be no dress code in any of the restaurants/bars in the hotel. The pool was lovely and there were lots of sun loungers in semi secluded areas. The hotel once had a pool bar but it seemed permanently closed when we went. Our room was large and clean. Our balcony was big and had a lovely view of the mountains and lake filled with lotus and water lillies. Convenient for a mini countryside break out of the city.

The hotel environment is amazing, very peaceful, very quite, and the design of the halls is awesome. It is about 30 to 40 mins away from city center by car. The staff is very gentle, helpful and welcoming. The interior design of the halls and the different sections of the hotel is derived from Italian culture, conference rooms named after great artists, halls after cities. The outer seating area and the greenery around the lake and the swimming pool are very serene. One thing is that if not for the staff, you would never know that you are in china :) The stores inside the hotel are high end, the convenience store is not cheap, it is considered expensive in comparison to regular shops and outlets. In a nutshell, it is a serene, quite and relaxing place after the long exhibition days, it is very suitable for a relaxing trip.

Great people ans place, I stay here 15 days per year and never had a bad issue.. the internet is a little slow at times, but it is included in the price so well worth it.

The resort is certainly a 5 star hotel, however the food for breakfast and 2 dinners which I consumed whilst staying there was below average. I would certainly stay there again however I think I will eat elsewhere.
