HillsNek Safari Camp – Amakhala Game Reserve

I have delayed leaving a review but as I keep being chased to do so then I will. The accommodation is fine but be aware as it is not as clear as it should be that there is no A/C. We happened to stay in March when there was insanely hot (40c) weather. It was insufferable. The tent is claustrophobic in that weather without air con. And obviously I appreciate why for environmental reasons they don't have it but one fan just will not cut it. The heat gets trapped in the tent all day and at night you feel like you might actually die. No sleep that's for sure. Also it's pretty hard to position a non floor standing fan to keep you cool in bed. At least have floor standing fans and more than one.

I absolutely again understand why their game viewing vehicles have no roof of any sort but absolutely nowhere is this made clear in advance. I found out when I got in the vehicle. Whilst this might improve the game viewing you are highly likely to fry alive. If I'd have known this I would never have booked so I want people to be aware. In probably 30+ visits to game lodges over nearly 50 years I have never come across this. They proudly say they are the only camp in the park to offer this, well there is a very good reason why other camps don't and if you choose to you need to warn people before they book.

A perfect location with a beautiful lodge and with only a few luxury tents it felt exclusive and personal, perfect to unplug and unwind. I particularly liked that guests were able to sit on individual tables at meal times rather than being on one large table like other camps. The outdoor shower was the best shower I have used in the world. The staff were all wonderful and the food was exceptional. The game drives were great with our ranger Tim, he listened to what we wanted to see and delivered opportunities to see and learn about amazing animals - would go back in a heartbeat. Location within the Amakhala Game Reserve was excellent, overlooking the reserve and seeing a range of animals from our deck. Staff couldn't do enough. Our guide Tim was fantastic and very knowledgeable. A real asset to Hilsnek..

I can’t find the right words to describe the beauty and uniqueness of this very special place. For us it was magical. The lodge is private, at the far end of the reserve and in the middle of nature. The whole lodge team is extremely friendly and very professional. They fulfilled every wish and created the best experience for us that we could imagine. They woke us up with coffee before sunrise and after our first game drive we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, followed by a lighter lunch before the second game drive for sunset. Dinner is a setup three course menu and every dish was very tasty. The interior is beautiful and the views from the rooms are wild and amazing. Between the drives we could chill at the pool or take a nap. Our game drives with Ebin our Ranger were mindblowing. We are feeling so blessed rightnow to have seen the Cheetah with her Babies so close and will never forget this moment. Special thanks to him but also to the whole Hills Nek Team for this unforgettable experience.

There simply aren’t enough superlatives to describe our stay. This was, without a doubt, one of the best stay we’ve ever experienced. With only four tents, everything feels incredibly exclusive and personal. The staff truly make you feel known and welcome — they remember your name and greet you warmly every time. Their kindness and attentiveness are unmatched. The lodges themselves were spacious, beautifully designed, and clean. The game drives were absolutely incredible. We saw so many animals up close, which made the experience even more special. A special mention goes to our ranger, Tim, whose passion for wildlife and nature is truly inspiring. His pride in working at Amakhala Game Reserve and his infectious positive energy made every drive unforgettable. Keep doing what you do, Tim! And to top it all off: elephants came right up to the lodge to drink. There are simply no words to describe how magical and unforgettable that moment was. We wholeheartedly recommend HillsNek to everyone, and we sincerely hope to return one day.

The luxury tents are spacious and comfortable, perfectly combining comfort with the feeling of being immersed in the African bush. The game drives were absolutely incredible, with stunning landscapes and amazing wildlife sightings. Every drive felt like a new adventure. A very special highlight of our stay was our guide Ebin. He was outstanding – incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and always eager to share fascinating insights about the animals and the ecosystem. His enthusiasm made every game drive even more special, and he went above and beyond to give us an unforgettable experience. The whole team at HillsNek was warm, attentive, and made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable safari experience.
