"Disappointing"

7.0

The staff were excellent. Although they were rushed of their feet dealing with a wedding, a wedding shower and aa full restaurant they were still very courteous and attentive. The room was very comfortable and quiet.

We've been coming to this hotel for about 18 years from a time when Old English Inns used to send me weekend offers, to birthday celebrations, overnight stays while I had my Supercar experience at Snetterton and an overnight stay for a Murder Mystery dinner. This stay was to join the Great Central Railway for a 40s weekend. For all of those years I have felt privileged that I have been able to stay in a historical property where William Wilberforce and Thomas Babington drafted the Act of Parliament for the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire and pleased that Greene King had bought it. However the state that it is getting in now makes me think that it may have been better if the National Trust should have taken it over. There is neglect evident throughout the property; the rooms at the front of the top floor appear to be abandoned with windows open and blowing in the wind, paint falling off the window frames outside, neglected gardening where the hedges are not being maintained, access to the river at the bottom of the garden, which used to be a lovely feature, is now overgrown with nettles, and the memorial to Wilberforce and Babington in the front garden which is cracked, broken and tarnished and becoming unreadable. Evidence suggests that the venue is doing very well. While we were there there was a wedding and a bridal shower happening. All the available rooms were full, the restaurant was full but we were able to eat in the bar area. The staff were being rushed off their feet but coping. Sunday was quieter but the beer garden was full of people. All suggesting that the venue is generating a good income and should be able to afford to address these maintenance issues. Hopefully we will be there again next year attending the same GCR event and hopefully some of the maintenance issues will have been addressed.

Needs money spending on the property rotten windows garden needs good tidy up food mostly reheated could easily be made a lot better. I have very good location such a shame.

The property is a nice old building lots of history a nice chapel for weddings for people, but just needs the money to spend on it for they can make it a lot nicer, but it doesn’t look as Man,,,‘s been paid for quite a while
